372094 miles on totally stock 1998 5.4

Well its out.verified 372094 miles. I would like to point out that this engine ran relatively well after I got done tuning it up and installing the new injectors, main reason for pulling the engine out to begin with was after I got it running well actually long before it ran while I was installing the new starter to get it to run are found at the rear exhaust manifold bolt studs were broke and it had a huge exhaust leak on the passenger side so I knew I didn't want to be fighting broken studs with the engine in the van. I'm just not up for that much of a challenge I just decided to pull it out and while I have it out I'm going to reseal it and install a new timing chain set.

Nice.... Ive got 234,xxx on my 5.8 but I can hear either a lifter or an exaust leak, probably wont make it that far but I have been very happy with the mileage Ive gotten from her.

Good luck with your repairs.

Looks good on top. What brand/type of oil have you been using? How did your chain tensioners look and any slack in the timing chains? I'm curious how the bores and pistons look and the bottom of the oil pan.

Sorry its been a while, Lotta **** has gone on since I was last here, , I bought the van with that many miles on it, It has been sitting up for over 6 years . I guess they changed the oil every 2,999 miles..lol I wound up rebuilding the whole engine, new main and rod bearings, now pistons, new rings, new timing set, the timing set that was on it was wore slam out, tensioners where maxed out, guides had a date code consistent with the engine build and the entire engine showed no signed it had even been apart front of rear. I sold the van and got a 2004 E250 cargo van with 178k on it and a bad transmission that I rebuilt and installed. These are the as disassembled pics, some bearings even still had the laser etched qr code still visible. and the last two are the inside of the oil pump.

Rebuilt and was set to the side to await the transmission rebuild.

Old friends together again.

Thanks for sharing your odyssey Jim Rockford---interesting photos.

The Modular Motors have been long regarded as great designs that would enjoy a long life IF properly maintained. Certainly things like the cam chains will wear out but they're not that difficult to renew simply following the instructions---there's no shortage of that anywhere Ford motors are discussed.

Good luck when all this is re-assembled and back on the road making money!
