400 engine question

Hey guys and gals, I'm hoping someone has a 351m/400 apart and could take a picture for me. Attached is a pic of my 400, and there is a hole in the front towards the distributer. On mine, there were a few chips so I cleaned it up with a die grinder, but was hoping someone else didn't get in there and do something oddball.

May be a silly question, but I'm just about at the stage to start throwing this thing back together and want to make sure things aren't all screwy before I do that.

Thanks in advance.

I've had a few of these apart and I've never seen that before. Was it rebuilt before?

Sorry about that, but I couldn't resist.

On a serious note, I've done 30,000+ trouble free miles since the build, so I don't think you need to worry.

Just make sure that all the grinding debris is thoroughly washed away.

When I initially saw mine, I thought WTF?.

(Or, if you don't swear, WTF = 'Gosh, what's that?'.)

I asked about it back in 2012, but although I can't remember the exact answer, it was something like a factory casting 'left over'.
