Posted this in the transmission forum with no luck. Anyone know the spec on the amount of allowed chain slack in a transfer case? I’ve got a bit of deflection. I’d like to take care of it now if necessary. Thanks!
The factory manuals have complete tear down and rebuild info. Have you looked there for the chain tension specs? My manuals are up at the farm, or I would look for you.

Not much you'll find there guys.
From my 2003 MY Excursion Ford factory manual set, section 308-07B contains no notice of tension, Step 34 only mentions 'Install the drive sprocket, the driven sprocket, and the drive chain as an assembly.'
Definitely no tensioner. And from what I’ve read, the chain getting loose and getting into the case is the major cause of grenaded transfer cases. I’ve looked several times for a rebuild manual as they normally have a spec like this, to no avail. I don’t have the ford shop manuals, but sounds like they wouldn’t be much help....I wonder if Allstate gear would tell me.

In any case, new chain ordered today. Hopefully I'll have it by end of week and I can get this thing out of my garage and to the X for mockup and eventual install. Still lots of work to do!!
