I noticed this rust while bleeding the front brakes. It does not feel wet. I am embarrassed to say that I missed this in my inspection on the new used vehicle. I noticed it after I cleaned the area. The van had a brake job prior to buying the van. I swapped out the calipers with my brand new calipers from another van.
Other than visually inspecting for leaks, is there another way to check the master cylinder for leaks?
There's no signs of fluid leaking in that photo---just rust of poorly protected bare metal. I'm sure there are semi-complex pressure testing methods for what the master cylinder can produce but most of us DIY's simply gauge a leak by pedal feel and of course whether fluid drops or streams can be seen anywhere along the brake lines and system.
I ordered a Raybestos master cylinder as no Ford master cylinders are made for this year-discontinued. I had a similar problem in my Honda and bought the master cylinder and finally installed it after 3 years because the leak became wet to the touch.
