True speed install??

OK I used the search and of the 8 posts this wasn't covered.

For those who have the true speed module, where did you install it? My instructions say that it is weather proof and could be installed under the hood but should be in the cab. I was planning to put it somewhere near the battery on the driver's side so there isn't a lot of wire to run. Where are you guys putting them?

Also what color wire did you tap? I read the instructions but it says 99-01. Mine is an 03. I would guess it is the same wire but just want to see.

I installed mine under the dash.

The wire color is gray w/ a black stripe on mine. Finding the wire took me a couple of minutes but it is located on the driver side towards the bottom near the frame. You have to splice into the ABS module harness which on a lifted Super Duty isn't easy unless you have a ladder, but what I did was take out 3-4 bolts that hold the wheel well liner in and pull it back. You can access the wires easier this way.

I am planning to go through the inner fender. Did you drill a hole in the firewall or just fish the wire through an existing hole?

One other tip, put the green wire from the Truspeed towards the connector side and the yellow goes to the loom and make sure you get out the trusty dusty souldering <spelling> Iron and make a good connection, after you've done that use the supplied heat shrink tubing on the connections.

Sorry we must have been typing at the same time, there is a hole in the firewall on the driver's side. I didn't have to drill a hole in mine however, the company that installed my alarm might have done this already.

Duksrule, Why are you adding a Tru-Speed? If it's to correct your speedometer, the factory computer can be re-set. I recently had mine recalibrated, $80.00.

Every stealership has a different fee they charge... I've heard some guys got it for free, and others have reported their stealership wanted close to $200. Also, it is my understanding that sometime around 2001 or 2002 they instituted a maximum tire size that the computer can be set to. I'm not sure what the size is, but if you go beyond it, you'll need an aftermarket unit like the TrueSpeed.

I'd still rather shell out for the TrueSpeed than put up with the dealership.

If he has a V-10 it has to be externally calibrtaed. You can't do it w/ a chip or reprogram the PCM. The Truspeed also can be calibrated for another gear ratio if you decide to change. If the dealer charged u each time u had to recalibrate, you'd be better off buying the Truspeed for $142.

Just to clear it up I have a 03 6.0 going up on 37s. That is past what the dealer can do.

Tankhead, The dealer reprogramed my PCM VIA software. Nothing to add or replace. This seems to be a better solution than adding an aftermarket product. Yes, $80.00 each time might seem expensive, but it will be stock.
I posted too quick, My dealer told me he could re-program for up to 37's.

The tone ring is on the carrier in the rear diff. There is no calibration for gear ratio. You can change them all day and it won't affect the speedo calibration. Only on rigs where the rev's are recorded before the diff like in the trannie.

The Truspeed has 2 settings , you can use one of them for the over sized tires and if you ever need to go back to the stock size you could then use the other available slot and just flip the switch...no more having to go to the stealership wasting your valuable time, money, aggravation, headaches and so on.

Thanks! Will be checking on that later. I've already got enough aftermarket "stuff".

Who says "stock" is better? It's only a small "box" that can easily be hidden, with a dial/switch. But it tears the chains that dealers put on you... it's a "do it yourself" solution that is superior than stock. You can get so precise with the TrueSpeed, it can even accomodate for the speedo errors when you wear your tires down (smaller diameter than original config). Not saying you'd ever have to do that, but there are other benefits (i.e. more than one tire size, never need to buy a new one, etc).
