I will do front, rear diff and transfer case fluid drain & fill. tranny drain & fill and fuel filter this weekend see how that helps. I was also going to do intake cleaning to see if that helps if it cleans carbon out
There is no fuel filter.

Do the math manually and do not rely on the dash meter.
What kind of terrain is those 5 miles ? 5 miles isn't much but it shouldn't be that bad. I'd expect to see 10mpg at least.

You sound like you have the same truck as I if tires are still stock. I’ve found that my truck takes several miles to warm up and settle in so to speak. The transmission takes the longest I’ve noticed. My commute is 19 miles one way so your tranny may not be reaching optimal temp - just a guess. It’s usually easy for me to stay in the 14’s empty. Try a longer trip this we or when you can and see what happens. Also, go ahead and give that ‘go’ pedal a little nudge- accelerating where she shifts between 2000-2500rpm sounds soo good and it’s probably not going to impact those mpgs too much lol.

My monitor on the dash shows 7.1 mpg. Full tank range is only about 280 miles on 35 gallon tank and as I drive about half a mile, it always drops a mile in the range. I tried to rev less than 2k rpm and really light on the pedal. I almost wonder if anything is wrong with the truck. I see people are getting almost 11-12 mpg empty and that's like dream mpg for me at this point.

I do have about 300 lbs of sand in the bed but that's about all the load there is.

Any input appreciated. I am willing to try anything to get to that 11-12mpg empty in the city.

Thank you
just wanna say that you shouldn’t really be driving this truck that short distance constantly. It’s murdering your wallet but it’s also murdering your engine. Diesels are meant to have legs and you’re shooting yours in both kneecaps.

What you state is true, and this completely baffles me. I've had every kind of American Made truck out there, and have never had any of them within 15% accuracy, yet both the 2007 Tundra and 2012 Tacoma that I owned were absolutely dead nuts on in accuracy, comparing them to calculated. If Toyota has done it for so long, why can't our manufacturers here do it?
