Input: Unloaded, High Milage Highway Driving w/6.2
Looking at buying a 6.2 very soon, using it during the week for a lot of unloaded highway driving. Any input on using the 6.2 in this form? Maybe a few hundred pounds in the bed, but not much of a trailer load with these highway miles.
I can't justify the Power Stroke just for extra MPG, and I'd assume the suggestion would be to get 3.73s on my 6.2?

I have the 3.73 and would only advise them for regular unloaded interstate/hwy driving(60mph+). If larger tires or towing is in the forecast I would strongly recommend 4.30. I think the best possible mpg in the F250 is had with the stock 245 tires or something in the range of a 31.5-32" tire. I have 33" now and since my switch from the stock 31.5" I feel my unloaded hwy mpg has suffered some. I can hit 14-15 mpg for only hwy miles, once I hit traffic or town my instant gauge eventually evens out around 11.
One of my reasons for wanting to order a new truck already is to get the 4.30's.
I have owned a lot of Powerstrokes, IMO, the only justification for owning a new one anymore is for regular towing or towing in excess of 15k.

I have 3.73's ccsb 4x4 and the tiny 31's. 12 mpg is all I have been able to manage, and I have been babying it. If I run 70 with the cruise on, it's actually under 12. I'm really hoping it gets better with some miles, currently at 2,700. I switched brands of gas today, going to see if that has any effect on this tank. FWW, my lie-o-meter has been very close to pencil and paper, within .1.
Oh, first couple tanks were under 11, found my hubs had been left locked in from the dealer.
Edit: I should mention that my daily commute to work is only 9 miles, with lots of red lights, most I miss in the am, but most I hit in the pm. I have been on several long highway trips.

My daily one way commute is 15 miles. roughly 7 hwy and 8 town. I finally got 11.2 on an entire tank fill today. It has always been under 11. I have 6k on my truck now but the fuel is no longer winter blend and that has helped.
I will be curious if your dads new truck does better.
12 mpg for pretty much town driving is great IMO. I can reset the mpg meter on the hwy and have it say 14-15 for the first part of my drive and then by the time I get through town I'm back around 11.

We have been back to summer blend a little over a month now. I have a 600 mile one way trip planned in early June pulling my 6k dry 30' travel trailer, loaded down and a golf cart in the bed to the outer banks of NC. Very interested to see what my mileage will be on that trip.
Your geographical location plays a huge part in mileage. Here in The foothills of East Tennessee, I'm never going to see the mileage that someone in the Midwest or Florida is going to see.
And I guess 12 city isn't to bad, but what gets me is at 70 on the interstate it's below that, I would expect 13-14. If I had long enough stretches of highway that I could run 55 for a long distance, I'm sure I could get 15+, but I never drive those long stretches of highway.
I went with 3:73 thinking if I really babied this truck I could average 14 like some others have, if I had known I was going to average 12, I most definitely would have waited for 4:30's. But like I said, maybe it will get a little better with some miles.

My baby is a 2012 standard cab with the 3.73's.
Currently have just over 48,000 miles. I have gotten over 15 mpg on the highway at 55 mph.
It tows fine, made several trips back and forth between NJ and Florida. with a 8.5x20 loaded trailer, right at 10,000 pounds each time. I stayed at 55 mpg when towing heavy and got 13 MPG
Currently I have a 15 mile commute each way - a couple of times a day, about 3 miles of it is in town traffic, couple of traffic lights etc, the other 12 miles is a nice stretch of country roads, occasionally stopping for a school buss or a turning vehicle. I have the manual four wheel drive and keep the front hubs locked in as I go a few hundred feet off road in the Florida sugar sand each trip.
In the winter months when I prefer open windows to air conditioning I stay right at 15 mpg. As soon as I start to regularly use the AC the mpg drops to 14 mpg.
I would describe myself as a conservative driver and do notice that if I let my darling dearest son drive the truck, the MPG will go down about 1.5 MPG as he is not as conservative a driver as I am.
Bottom line - great truck and I have had no issues with the 6.2 - 3.73 combination at all.

I lost about 1 mpg when I went to new wheels and 35's. Just got back from a 700 mile road trip and my avg was 13.2 @ 70mph mind you i'm in Florida where is all flat. Towing my travel trailer 33ft Forest River vivbe loaded 8400lbs im doing about 7.8-8.4 mpg.. My boat Sea Vee 32 ft 10,000 lbs im doing 7 mpg. I also have 3.73 gears on my 6.2. I had a 6.7 and it was only about 2 to 3 mpg diffrence. On road it would do 15-16 empty maybe 17 under 70.
