2003 7.3 dies intermittently without warning, will restart after cool down for about an hour. changed cps, fuel pump is running fine, new fuel filter, oil, and oil filter. dies like the key is shut off and runs fine when it will finally restart. I'm suspecting IPR, but would like feedback please. I disconnected the Edge tuner without any affect. I don't have a code reader, so I'm a little blind.
Sounds like you would be able to easily test the suspect IPR. Carry a can of compressed air for computers with you on your next drive, when it shuts off invert the can, and blast the IPR solenoid for a few seconds, then try and restart. If it starts after chilling it all signs point to bad IPR.
I see what happened... there are actually TWO threads with the identical Title and identical first post. I first responded in the other one, and the rest of you responded to this one!

Sorry about that couldn't figure out how to delete second post. Problem still with me' sitting by the side of the road waiting for it to cool. I tried the canned air cooling, still no start. Beginning to suspect the hpop.
On a hot shut down like that, you are usually looking at a bad o-ring or IPR valve. When the oil gets hotter and thinner, it finds it's way out of the high pressure loop through the weak spot. It is usually the IPR o-rings, but could also be a bad o-ring on an injector. The "leak" causes you to lose enough pressure in the high pressure oil supply to cause the truck to shut down. Once the oil cools, it is too thick to squeeze through the weak spot, and the truck will run until it heats up again.
This does not rule out a fuel issue, it is just the most likely scenario based on our collective years of experience here.
When it does not start next time get a pitcher of cold water and pour it over the HPOP. If it starts after then you have a HPOP issue or IPR. If not its under the valve covers.
