no start issue...

im having a no start issue with my 7.3 its got over 230k on it and it doesnt wanna start all the time...the only thing i can notice that is differant is that when it doesnt wanna start there isnt a small humming in the passenger floor area that is generally present when it dies start...does anyone know what maybe causing this...my gpr's are workin fine it would seem but this acts like a no fuel situation the electric pump is working...it almost seems to me to be a hot start problem vaporlock maybe...idk...also it has been just randomly shutting down after start up...thats what has lead me to post this today...i walked out and started my truck 10min prior to leaving work and one of my coworkers comes and tells me my truck shut down...so here i am 1hr later still at work....btw i am a diesel mech just new to the 7.3l

Toad, does it throw any codes? how did you check the fuel pump, It might be getting weak, open water drain vavle and turn on key look for a steady stream, not a trickle. Have you changed the fuel filter, did you notice any waxing or particles on the filter?

Could also be a CPS acting up.

have you checked the Oil in the HPOP as well as in the crankcase.

The CPS does some weird things to different trucks sometimes.

Do you have a scanner capable of reading the powerstroke sensor PID's?

Assuming there is a working fuel pump three thing need to happen to crank a 7.3.

1. Voltage > 10.5vdc
2. RPM's > 100
3. ICP > 500psi

Injection control pressure - There are 2 oil systems on the powerstroke LPOP (low pressure) engine lube and HPOP (High pressure) drives injectors. The HPOP is fed by the LPOP but other than that is is separate. The sensor sticking out of the driver side head toward the front is the ICP.

Usually not but an intermittent problem may just seem to be on hot starts.

Couple of things to check

1. Oil level on dipstick (cold and hot)
2. Oil level in HPOP reservoir (before cranking and after stall) The reservor is the box under the powerstroke cover there is a plug with a hex in it to the right side to check level.
3. How long does it take the oil pressure gauge on the dash to come up after cranking (Cold and Hot)
4. What oil is in it and how many miles on the oil

Toad

If you'll notice on the bottom of Amiller93's signature there are some links to Common mods and Maintenance, go and search this page it has huge amounts of info and also some common acronyms, to help bring you into Ford Speak. As Alan said you must have a scanner capable of reading Ford Diesel codes, Not just the standard OBDII. Since you are a mech. if you have the Snap On reader then you may be able to get the Ford Diesel program from your route guy. If you have a Lap top then the Auto Enginuity program comes to mind (it will allow you to do all the KOEO, KOER, tests and also live diagraming of the PSD) Just do a search for Auto Enginuity

Hopefully some of the above mentioned checks will solve your problem.

problem solved if finally left me at work and wouldnt start at all so i called the dealer and went and got a CPS (this was based on another thread i was reading where someone mentioned that if the tach wasnt working it was prob the CPS on trucks prior to '02...well my tach was just laying there dead while cranking) , swapped it out and it starts like a champ now...just it set me back 145$ thank god for my discount or it woulda been 210$

Now that you have a good one in engine get a spare for the glove box from ebay for about $50. (not to add salt to wounds, just cheap insurance)

glad you got her back up and going.
