New or Used?

Hey guys, opinion time here. In the next few months I plan on trading up from my trusty 2005 F150 to a new/used 2017+ 250 SD 6.7 (hopefully in time for my September birthday ). I'm looking at Lariat or King Ranch (all the bells and whistles), and was originally looking for used with as few miles as possible, hoping for a price of around $65k / <$75k OTD. Thanks to these forums, however, I've heard of the glory of the PCO's, and many stories of people dealing with ordering a truck and getting invoice pricing, and it seems that if the right deal is made, a new truck wouldn't be a big jump from my target used price.

Here's some questions:
  • Value of New vs Used if the difference is only $5k or so? Or rather, what dollar amount would you draw the line at? Particularly considering that I live in CA and used KR's are REALLY hard to find, and Lariats are difficult to find with my preferred tan interior. I even considered flying to Texas or somewhere if I found the right truck and driving it home, but considering a plane ticket, $500+ fuel bill, and a few hotel nights, that's a good chunk of change towards a new truck...
  • Along those lines, anybody have great experiences with good pricing from any particular SoCal Ford dealers?
  • I'm kind of expecting that a lot of dealer incentives will require dealer financing? If that's the case, how much were you all able to beat down the interest rate? Ford's advertised rate is like 6%, but I have a credit union that can easily get under 3.5%, so using dealer financing is somewhat daunting.
  • Any tips on what kind of incentives / rebates / offers to look for? Or any other advice for that matter.

TIA for any thoughts... Let's see where this goes! Exciting!

This has been discussed on here a few times, new vs used. The used market on these trucks is very close to new, after deal incentives and the PCO's that are out. The savings, to me, didn't make it worth going used.

Special ordering a 19 wont be for too much longer. That September date you have will be too late for a special order, since the 2020's will be coming out, and therefore you're left with whats on the dealer lots, if you find what you like. Not sure on exact date for a special order 19's. I do think you can find a special order king ranch or lariat for that 65-75K OTD number.

I would start calling some dealers and asking about special ordering a truck. Build it how you want on fords website, scan and email to them. Get their price and see. I contacted a few dealers and found one 200 miles away willing to really work with me. I saved almost 18% off mspr.

FORD Financing will save you $500-$1000 when you sign the papers at whatever % they offer. Leave the dealer and refinance with a local credit union for 2-4%. Many threads on this too. I did the same.

Check around on trade value first. Mine ranged from just a 7k pay off to 15k, 25k and the pay off

I walked into 3 dealerships with 3lbs of 100 dollar bills in a large zip lock bag and put it right on the sales person desk. He, the sales manage, and finance manager came over and said you could of brought a bank check. I said that wouldn’t make any sense if we don’t do a deal becuase I’d have to get a new check for each dealership. I said if I bring cash, I can get up and go to the next dealership.

The dealership that got my Buisness was only 5 dollars off on the invoice they sent me for max trade in, max discounts and rebates, and lowest starting price.

they sold my old truck 2 days later for high book which is 7k more than what they gave me.

if you are a vet, get the military 500 off discount. Plus the loyalty discount, and they some times have an additional 1000 trade in discount.

i bought a new 2019 lariat to replace my 2010 lariat. I needed tow prep package, snow plow prep, enhance tow package, dual alternators, sliding sunroof and sliding rear glass.

If if I could of got that in an xl or xlt, I would have been fine. Got a lariat with a lot of plus up pa Kahn’s that I will never use. So don’t get hung up on king ranch or platinum.

If you buy a new truck with zero miles, call you endurance of mechanical breakdown insurance. For about 5 bucks a month they will provide a 7yr/100k warranty.

New is always good. The last new vehicle I bough was a 2000 and I kept that for 12 years. Bought all my kids and my wife at least 2 new cars each in the meanwhile. I was due for new for me so I needed to make it happen.

i almost bought a freightliner M2 106 super truck that only had 8k miles for the same price of my 2029 but I couldn’t find insurance for it...since I t had a giver of 80k lbs I needed to be actively engaged in commerce and have all the numbers to prove it in order to buy the freight liner . So that didn’t work out.

Thanks for the input! So far, I'm relatively indifferent if it came to ordering a 2020 vs 19. Just wondering if I'd find a great deal on a lot somewhere once the new models come out. Guess that's the price of admission for knowing you'll get exactly what you want. I already emailed one dealer and haven't heard back yet.

I thought about the refinance deal too, probably the best approach. Just hope I can snag a PCO...

Thanks again!

I'm 99% sure I won't be buying until I sell my 150 private party, thinking I'll get quite a bit more out of it that way, and I'm hoping it'll simplify the battle with the dealer on negotiations.

New sure is sounding good...

I was looking a 2016 lariat with less than 10k miles from a private seller. Basically the exact same 2019 truck I wound up buying.

i had an approved loan with the cash transferred to my checking account.

my loan conditions was dealer only , no private sales. That was a surprise to both of us.

his sell price for the 2016 and my 2019 out the door price was about the same (after trade and everything else) .

so it really did not take more effort to buy new.

used would not have qualified for my insurance company breakdown protection insurance.

That's me. Well, most of it. I just upgraded from a 2005 F-150 KR to a 2019 F-350. Lariat was my trim package of choice. There were some cosmetic things I liked better about the Lariat than KR, the KR ultimate included moonroof (which is a deal-killer), and Lariat is $1-2k cheaper (and I was already at my max budget ... so why pay more for things I didn't value?).

Your used price range of $65 is my OTD price for new. I had a PCO, thanks to the good people here. Invoice pricing should be easy. In fact X-Plan (which is within ~0.3% of invoice) is available to all for $25 and is often a better deal than invoice, due to limiting the dealer fees. So, start with X-Plan/Invoice and see if you can beat that by $1-3k.

CA to TX one way should be about $200 and why on earth would you need "a few hotel nights" for that trip? Maybe try driving more than 5 hours per day?

For me, the used market just wasn't what I was looking at, it didn't save nearly as much money, I keep my trucks forever and don't want others' problems, I've not been that lucky with my used purchases, and, finally, I'm not willing to make any compromises at this price point. So, it was an easy decision: new and I'm ordering exactly what I want (and nothing I don't).

Just stay current on what Ford offers and grab a PCO.

I'm very happy with my upgrade. Let me know if you have any questions.

Dang 67L48, congrats on the upgrade! Yeah, if I can snag a PCO that would make things a heck of a lot easier; I've subscribed to the PCO thread so hopefully I'll get an email and see it in time whenever things pick up.

Went through the same scenario and was going to get a used one even had a plane ticket but the seller reneged when he found out his loan wouldn't be paid off for a few days.

Just got new. Not much more and I ordered.

i bought a new 2019 KR CC LB and LOVE it!

I was was originally looking at the Lariat, but then decided if Inwas already spending this kind of money, go ahead and get what you really want.

I ordered mine from Ford, built exactly to my specs.

Good luck! Whatever you decide is beat for you, you will love it!
