Will a stock 69 302 distributor work & fit ok in a 87 5.0 roller motor if I change to a steal gear?
It will physically fit, and if you replaced the old gear with a STEEL gear, it will work with the stock roller cam without shredding. But the 69 distributor will not work with the stock EFI system of the 87 engine.
Not sure if I'll ever drop it in my motor but was wondering more about the fitment / gear with a roller cam ..... points should work ok if I use the right coil w/res.& change the plug gap??

I've run a points distributor after changing the gear to steel, but with an electronic module. And unless you have a dwell meter to set them, running points is well, pointless. The gap is a starting point, you have to use a dwell meter to get them set where they need to be for the best performance out of them. I've actually done the gear swap on two points distributors.
I have a old Sears analyzer w/ dwell function but not sure if it works from sitting around since the 70's....... I heard of folks triggering electronic modules with points, what module did you use? I could also use the stock ignition setup from a 85 Mustang? The ignition I now have ( Mallory Unilite ) is not very robust, gone through 2 module's in 4 years so looking into something more reliable.

I used Pertronix I and II and a Crane XR-1. All with hotter than stock coils. 85 Stang HO with manual transmission is the only application with a steel gear. This is a Duraspark II as I recall. This is what I'm running in the 331 in my 77 Comet with a stock spark box fired with a MSD coil. It's good to 7 grand. I have the stock small to large cap adapter on it with the large post type cap. 9mm Ford Racing wires.
You got some interesting rides man, can you post some pics? This is what I run in my 49 Ford F1,,,,,,,87 roller 306, mild rebuild w / Mallory Unilite dist.,MSD coil, ballast resistor & a
MSD circuit guard.
Only one I currently have now is the 77 Comet. I'll have to dig through my computer to see if I have pics of the others. But not sure if I can post pics here.
Having recently done a conversion from points to DS2, the biggest improvement I see now is how quickly the engine starts when cold, even after having sat for a week. And with the retard during crank feature, I can push the ignition timing advance further before it kicks back on hot starts.
I'm thinking the DS2 might be work for me, I'll do some research on the swap and go from there. The most important concern I have is dependability and peace of mind...... not getting that with the Mallory Unilite after getting boned twice in 4 years and only 3000 miles of use. Thanks for the feedback....nice 69 Mustang!

I just went thru a very strange situation. I have a 302/5.0 crate, not sure of the year (85 up) I had a Unalite go bad and decided to go with a Pertronix flamethrower. When I went to install the distributor it wouldn’t fit. It felt like the gears were starting to mesh but it wouldn’t go down in the block. I thought the oil pump drive shift was not lining up ( it wasn’t) I put grease and the shaft to hold in place, still no luck. After calling the tech line and more tries, no luck. I then measured everything on both distributors, all was the same EXCEPT the diameter of the distributor shaft( Mallory 0.4490 Pertronix 0.4520 ) called tech again with these measurements, they said it should fit and the MDS that fit that engine measures 0.50. So I then thought measure the block opening for the oil pump drive shaft. The only way I have to measure it was with drill bits (because the hole being 4” in the block) I found the biggest bit that would fit and measured it with calipers, 0.4510. I had to shave it down to .4490 and it fit like a dream.
I haven’t talked to anyone else that has experienced this. Maybe someone on the forum has, if so I’d like to know what year the engine is please.
Will the MSD blaster coil (.8 ohm ) work with the DSII components? I see on the wiring schematic showing a 1.10 ohm resistor. What ohm coil and or resistor should I be using? I also have a fairly new Summit chrome coil @ 60K with a primary resistance of 1.5.........would that work? Thanks.
