I originally ordered the Precision weatherstrip/seal kit from Graveyard. I was pleased with the quality and fit with everything until I got to the windshield seal. It was quite rigid, it felt a bit too short width-wise, and the corners were ugly. I went ahead and installed the windshield, anyway. I didn't like the way it fit at all. The top corners didn't even cover the windshield body inset. So, I ordered a DC one. Right out of the box, it was obviously a better quality piece. I installed it, and it still barely covers the inset at the top corners of the body. I was able to work the seal on the sides in an upward direction to help it a little, but not much. There's a gap between the inner part of the seal and the face of the body inset big enough to stick a finger in at the upper corners.
I was wondering if anyone had ever had an issue like this. I feel like it has to be the glass. It's a new windshield, and I bet it's undersized. I've repainted the truck, so I lost the old seal line to compare. I'm positive the the old seal covered more of the body at the top, though.
Make sure the new molding/seal is right side up. The little, sharp corner ears go towards the top I believe, thus covering the upper corners of the body. The one I installed a couple of weeks ago WAS directional as I am stating. Good luck!
I wondered that I had somehow installed the first one upside down, but the length of the bottom segment is about 6" longer than the top. Seems like it would be near impossible to get it on the glass upside down.
There is 3/8 gap at the corner down in the inset. As a result, the exterior visible rubber barely covers the inset at the top corners. The seal is firmly seated on the pinch weld all the way around. Again, it just seems like the glass is too small.
Not sure I'm understanding fully. It doesn't sound like there an obvious gap at the pinch weld that would allow it to leak? You said the seal is "firmly seated on the pinch weld" and that's where the seal actually takes place so does that mean its sealed from water penetration?
Have you sprayed with hose to check for leaks? If it doesn't leak, you may be chasing something that's more a perceived problem than a functional one.
Yes, I got the new seal from DC. When I say the glass may be too small, I'm just guessing that it might be undersized slightly or that the corners might be rounded off, perhaps for easier installation or less breaks. I don't think its possible that it's simply the wrong the one. I got the glass from a retired professional who had his own business for a decades.
Here's a couple of pics of my 79 F150, with the original Ford seal & glass. I had the windshield out in 2003 when I painted the truck. Only thing changed from factory installed is the chrome trim added instead of the black. Gap looks about the same as yours.
