Vin help

I am a brand new user. I hail from northern Saskatchewan, Canada. I have 2 old grain trucks that I am trying to get operational to use around our Bible Camp for hauling firewood. Both trucks need some engine parts but can’t figure out what engines are in them. I have exhausted my searches in trying to find vin information up here other than trying to find an old Ford mechanic that used to work on these trucks. And from all the posts I’ve read my vin number seems to be differently than yours. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One is a 1965 M600 and the other is an F600 (not sure of year but is mid to later 60’s).

M600 vin is 1816074L-234083F.
engine code is SN
tranny is C4TA700AA

F600 vin is 4816074L-174902F
engine code is RN
tranny is C4TA700E

Thanks
Bruce

Hello from Edmonton Bruce!

See the link below, should help shed some light on what you're working with.....**see the Canadian Built link, as the nomenclature/codes used on Warranty/Data plate on the '61-'65 CDN built trucks is considerably different than the US built trucks....

Just some quick info on the engines.

SN - S indicates 1965 and SN is the 8 cylinder 330 C.I.D Medium Duty motor.

RN = R indicates 1964 but I don't have good enough 1963 or 1964 Canadian information for the full decode on the engine in that one. I suspect it is the same 330 C.I.D. motor.

I can decode the rest of it but work is getting in the way today.

CDN VIN Range (aka: Consecutive Unit Number) 144,000 thru 192,999 = 1964, so with CUN of 174902, the F600 is a '64.

My CDN Ford/Mercury Shop Manual only covers F100 thru F350, the heavier trucks have their own Shop Manual (I have seen several for the heavier trucks @ Swap Meets here, but passed, as it's outside of my range of ownership).

The 100 thru 350's didn't use anything bigger than the 292 Y Block.....

Neither the 1964 or 1965 info on Fordification seems to cover the RN or SN engine codes, but lots of easy to find info there. I have a few pages from the 1965 manual that help with the SN engine code. Or the 1964-1972 MPC also lists the engines for 1965 Canadian, but oddly not 1964.
Ignore the circled items.

Chad as I mentioned a couple posts above, for the early CDN produced Slicks, the Warranty/Data Plates and the codes/nomenclature used bare no resemblance to the US ones.....'65 was a little closer, '66 is the same.

Oh, and some of the info on Fordification is for F100 thru F350, as the heavy trucks had their own shop manuals....

James, I didn't question anything you had said.

However, that being said, my 1961 and 1962 Canadian manuals cover 100 through 800 series trucks.

James, you mentioned buying a 1962 at a swap meet. Does it cover these same series? I just looked in my older emails and it looks like it is the same.

Chad: Sorry for the confusion. I never said you did, I was just responding to your comment: "Neither the 1964 or 1965 info on Fordification seems to cover the RN or SN engine codes,"

The codes don't show up because they are for engines that were never used in F350 or lighter models......

1961/63 F500/700 has a 292, either a 2V or 4V. 1964 F500/700 could have the 292 or an FT engine. 1965/78 F500/750 have FT engines.

1964/72 Ford truck parts catalog decodes 1965 Canadian VIN's, but not 1964. 1966/68 Canadian trucks use the same VIN, Warranty Plate and codes stamped thereon as US trucks.

I was under the impression that 1961/64 used a different VIN sequence (reverse of) than 1965. But both of these VIN's have the same sequence.

1816074L-234083F

1 = 8 cylinder engine / 81 = Cab & Chassis / 60 = 600 Series / 74 = 174" Wheelbase / L = Left Hand Drive / 234083 = 1965 / F = 19,501-26,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating range.

1965 C/CT700/1100; F800/1100; T700/950: Numerical Sequence of Asssembly begins with 150,001

1965 B500/750; C500/600; E100; F100/750; P100/500: Numerical Sequence of Assembly begins with 195,001
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4816074L-174902F

4 = 8 Cylinder Engine / 81 = Cab & Chassis / 60 = 600 Series / 74 = 174" Wheelbase / L = Left Hand Drive / 174902 = 1964 / F = 19,501-26,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating range.

Welcome from Alberta. Just another note on the Canadian only V.I.N. 1=Mercury V8; 4=Ford V8; 5=Mercury 6cyl; 6=Ford 6cyl. There actually appears to be no difference between the Ford and Mercury engines.

Thanks for all the great info. Wasn’t sure what to expect.

As for both engines possibly being 330’s, not too sure on that. The SN has distributor at rear of engine and RN at front. SN uses crossover exhaust pipe on front of engine between manifolds RN does not. Also both have different water pumps. RN is 2bbl and SN is 4bbl.

I got the 64 was running today. Seems to be running smoothly. Have to check brakes over now. The 65 needs water pump and master brake cylinder rebuild or replace. Then can check actual operation.

Thanks sgain for sll the info

Would anyone have a part number for the water pump on the 1965 330 engine? Or a rebuild kit for the pump?

Pics of both the motors might help some people identify your engines better. Your rear distributor engine could be a swap out for something else entirely.

If your 1964 has the dizzy behind the carburetor, it's a 292 Y block, not an FT engine.

Your 1965, as Chad pointed out in post #3, has a 330 2V Medium Duty FT engine. Both FE & FT engines have 5 valve cover bolts per side.

D4TZ-8501-H .. Water Pump (Motorcraft PW-138) / Obsolete ~ Available NOS & from auto parts stores.

1964/72 B/C/F/N/NT500/750 & 1970/72 LN550/750 with 330 2V M/D FT engine // 1965/71 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars with 352/390/410/428 FE engines.

1965/76 F100/350 352/360/390 FE engines.

There's no rebuild kit for these waterpumps.
