Head Rest Addition

I searched the forums before venturing out on my own and found limited options for what others had done to modify the seat back for headrests. Junk yard searches found a good set of headrests from the back seat of a Ford Escape along with their plastic mounting sleeves that can be removed from the receiver tube:

I bought some new steel tube off Amazon (overpriced, but what I could get at the time):

Cut the tube to fit the original plastic mounts:

Drilled, ground and welded tubes to the seat back:

And done:

The head rests still adjust up and down like the original application. I would, however, recommend to anyone else trying this to install the tubes farther toward the front of the upper seat bar, probably only cut about halfway in rather than through the middle like I did. That way the headrests would be farther forward (I had to bend them forward a little after install...oops). Also, for those with long torsos your head may still hit the window, even in the fully extended position. Works for me though because this was done to make the wife happy and allow the kid to safely and legally ride in the middle using the FMVSS-approved Ride Safer Travel Vest:
