I just bought the truck last week. It is a 2004 F-250 v10 gas. It runs and drives great but early in the morning when it is real cold there is a hesitation to go into 3rd gear. I have googled this a lot and it seems to be a very common problem with this. I don’t think the tranny is bad because it has good clean fluid and it shifts fine any other time it is just slow to shift when cold. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to solve it?
Something in the transmission is getting clogged or going bad. Could be as easy as a transmission filter change or as crappy as a EPC or Shift Solenoid that is clogged or going bad..
"When an Automatic Transmission shifts SLOW, it usually means that the Pump is unable to get enough of the transmission fluid to pump through the system to effect the Various "Actions" as required....so it's essentially suffering from fluid starvation until the transmission fluid is sufficiently heated up (So that it loses some of its viscous properties or "Thickness" when cold) to get around the insufficiency or bottle-neck in the process."
The quote I found on another forum really sums up cold Transmissions.

I had a V10 powered, 2004 F250. My trans was slow to go into reverse, but also shuttered when taking off from a stop. I was out of warranty so a trans shop looked into it and found the valve body bolts were loose, not allowing the proper pressure to build up. Somewhat of a known issue with some of the 4 speed OD trans, or so I was told. It seems the bolts are hollow for oil flow. Miles since your last trans service?
