The 76-77 "Y" 4WD steering has lots of wear points and my understanding it is difficult to maintain alignment. The common recommendation is to upgrade to the 78-79 "T" style linkages.

Agreed. But it would be nice if someone at least still made them. Maybe they do, but all of my suppliers stopped carrying them by the late eighties! So unless someone is currently still making them, it might be a bit hard to find 30 year old "old stock" anywhere.

The good news is that you parts to upgrade are readily available and easy to fit. The bad news is that it will cost you more because not only did you only want to replace one link but have to replace two, you have to get a new pitman arm too!
Sucks, but probably the reality. I have not dug too deep on the subject though, so maybe you'll get lucky and find someone that's got what you need.

Good luck.

Paul

How long is the drag link, 13 5/8" or 46 1/4" long?

I did this to my f150 last summer. The hardest part was getting the Pitman arm off!
I got all my stuff from Wild horses.

I Looked everywhere for the original "Y" style parts but I'm really glad I didn't find them and did the upgrade to the "T" style.
Note: If you do decide to go to the "T" style you will most likely want a steering damper mounting bracket from a 78 or 79.
It's different then the "Y" bracket.

Good Luck.
