I live in AZ, was on a dirt road in the Coconino National Forest (Rim Road 300). Normal bumps you'd expect in a dirt road, driving very cautiously in my month old 2019 F-350 with an FX4 package and suddenly a loud metal clang noise is heard from the front passenger side and it feels like we dropped into a pot hole and bounce out. I'm dreading what I will find behind my truck as I pull it forward ever so slightly, ever so slowly. I place it in park, walk to the rear of my vehicle and find this...
Any mods? Is the shock still attached at the top and bottom? It would be difficult for the spring to become dislodged with the shock still attached, unless a faulty shock over-extended somehow, allowing the spring enough space to come out.... brake line on that side still look good?

This was stock suspension, no mods or upgrades, straight from the factory. The shock was still attached, but was damaged when the spring "popped" or "shot" out. Brake line was also damaged from the projectile. I also found a minor dent in a light cross beam welded to the frame.
Had it towed to the dealership Saturday, after waiting hours in the woods, then took two hours to tow it to the dealership close to my house. Dropped it off after hours only to wait for a call Monday after it was inspected. Mechanic said he expects the parts in today and he should have it done later this afternoon. *crossing fingers*
My assumption is: It was never installed correctly from the manufacturer, somehow wasn't seated correctly. That, or it was a defective spring, or maybe as you are suggesting faulty shock to allow it to over extend, but I assume the axle bolted to the frame would still not allow it to extend far enough to allow the spring to come out. I'm just glad this didn't happen while towing and traveling freeway speeds with the family.
Not to hijack but be sure to tell your dealership to check the ENTIRE suspension. If the factory blew it on one part the whole thing needs going over, preferably with a torque wrench.
I lost a manual hub in a brand new 90-something F250 with 2000 miles on it. Took it to Ford and they fixed it on warranty, It wasn't greased at the factory. 1500 miles later the opposite side hub went out. When asked they said they did not check the other side at repair time.. DANG!
Here are some additional pics. You can see how low the passenger side is, even the driver's side is lower than normal due to the additional weight on one spring.

Good tip. I did tell them to check both sides. Let's hope they did.
That stinks! I think the same thing happened to this dually I spotted at O’Reillys the other day. Not sure how the leaf springs popped out of the back though!
Thats crazy, your spring has to compress so much to clear the coil bucket, I had to jack my truck up and drop the axle as far as it would go and I still needed to use a spring compressor to get the coil out. I have no idea how thats possible just driving down the road...
