What year? and Engine

I have purchased what is purpotedly a 1977 400 but I am having trouble proving it. Here is all I've found without pulling valve covers.

Left valve cover decal : H J 4 2 8 A ... with punchouts for c21 which I presume to be mar 21.

Right valve cover decal states 351m/400 family with D7AE 9C 4 8 5

the carb code D 7 O E HD seems to check out as a 1977 year carb.

The oil pressure sending unit has what appears to be 8 H 19 so maybe august 19 1978?

Distributor tag is D6AE 12127AA

Anything I can gleen from this info?

49 State with Thermactor and A/C.

What's the calibration number?

Right valve cover decal states 351m/400 family with D7AE 9C 4 8 5
Ok, so it's an AE. Right below the Engine Family line there should be an Engine Displacement line.

Does it say automatic on the VECI? And if it does, what is the timing degree, the timing RPM and the spark plug type and gap? Oh, and the fast idle speed and cam?

Cross-check

Ash thanks for your help! I've looked more closely at the right valve cover decal... engine specs decal:

Engine displacement---------400-2v
Sparkplug ...........................ARF-52
Valve Lash ..........................Hyd not adj
Timing..................................8 deg BTDC
RPM......................................800

Emissions Applicable to 1977

The engine displacement seems to verify it's a 400 not a 351M but since these are in same family wasn't sure if can go by that

Applicable to 1977 seems to verify year but I'm not sure I can rely on that either but probably

Casting codes and dates can be found on the lower right side of the engine block near where the starter bolts up.

Measure the stroke. If the piston moves up and down 4" it's a 400 if it is 3.5" it's a 351.

400 or 351m

That's a big duh (why didn't I think of that?)...

I 'll do that on one of the engines (since I've got the heads off the 351m), but the other ... that'd be tougher to do

Thanks! I'll check the 351m see if I have to get a crank and pistons for it.

You can do a rough measurement through the spark plug hole. Just find something that will fit in and reach the bottom when the piston is at bdc. Then turn it over and measure how far it pushes it back out the hole. Something flexible like a piece of coathanger will do.

Rough measurement through the spark plug hole is too rough to be useful.
