I'm considering a 77 F150 4x4. The engine does not look to be original. It is modified with a manifold, Carb and headers. How do I tell what engine it is?
8 valve Cover bolts, the valve covers are chrome and very high. The two on top in the center come through the top of the valve cover so the stud that screws into the head is about 4" long.
The spark plugs come straight out, the drivers side may lean a little to the rear, the passenger side may lean a little to the front.
I pulled the drivers valve cover only to find a very clean surface with roller rockers.
I also noticed that the bolts holding the headers on are offset. If you can picture this 10:00 oclock and 4:00 as opposed to 9:00 & 3:00...make sense?
Okay, how about this...suspect 351 is cubic inch...roller rockers, modified manifold and carb with headers. Block casting reads D7TE A2B on the passenger side near the rear. What in the heck do I have, I just bought the truck today.
Its probably a 351M, 400, 429, or 460. I would bet money on it being a 400 or 351M (basically the same thing) because I don't think that the 460 had that many valve cover bolts. The 302/351W has 6 bolts.
Soooooo, 8 VC bolts means ? Does 400 or 351m have that exhaust bolt configuration? What about 351c or maybe cj...I had a friend with a 76 Torino GT with a CJ from the factory. There was a huge issue with headres fitting because of that bolt pattern. I notice the oil pan looks weird. It doesn't form a 6" or 7" square at the bottom like normal but rather comes to the passenger front almost to a fitted sump pickup and I mean looking at it from the outside.
There is no way that you had a '76 Torino GT with a 351C from the factory. They stopped making the 351C in 74. It would be really cool if it was a 351c in your truck though, thats a pretty awesome motor.
True enough, it was a 72 Gran Torino Sport...351CJ
As for the numbers on the block they are D7TE A2B
What is a 335 series and do tose numbers help.\Hey Wiz, the truck was on a lot from an auction...unable to ask the guy who owned it.
The 351M and 400 used the same block and heads, and all external parts are interchangeable, so the only way to determine which of these two engines you have is to examine the crankshaft for the casting ID code.
