eBay $39 spare tire hoist
eBay $39 spare tire hoist
ARGH! Just bought a 2006 F350. Had no spare so I bought a rim and mounted one of my take off tires (replaced two). So far so good. When I was going to put the newly mounted tire on my spare tire hoist noted someone had cut through 90 percent of the bottom retainer on one side; the part that goes through the hole in the rim. Couldn't figure this out as there was enough material it would have broken off if someone swiped the tire from the PO. Anyway, bought a $39 DIRECT FIT replacement off eBay. Problem is, one crank down about a foot of cable and the thing jammed. Got my money back. I had previously purchased one of the tire changing rod sets (more on ths later) off eBay and the hoist just jammed. I returned it and got my money back. Popped the security insert out of the old one and took it to Rio Medina NAPA and the boys welded the tire retainer where it had been cut. Got home and all was good till the crank started to spin... the cheap Chinese rod had a metal finger inserted and then the rod (tube steel) was pressed just not pressed enough for the finger to hold. I beat on it with a hammer but the metal of the tube is soft and it didn't hold. Back to the Napa and they put a tack weld on the finger in the tube and now all is good. Moral of the story, if you need a tire hoist or jack set, head to the scrap yard and not eBay... Chinese junk for the most part.
