Bent hitch Pin

I tow a bumper pull trailer that empty is 7400 lbs but using the 3 inch receiver and a weight distributing hitch it always bends the hitch pin. Just enough that it gets hard to take out and reinstall. Any one else have this problem and whats the cure ?

I'd almost think something is causing you issues somewhere else. I've never bent a hitch pin on any of the trucks or equipment I've ever had. Normally the hole get egged shaped before anything else.

Are you using a collar to reduce the 3” to 2.5” ?

I bent a couple of those Reese brand locking hitch pins. Replaced them with a Bolt locking hitch pin which hasn’t bent but did start “ovalling” the pin hole in the receiver using a 2.5” drawbar with the 2.5” sleeve. The solution was to weld the 2.5” reducer into the 3” receiver. This has completely eliminated all slop and stopped the damage.

The fact is, I seriously doubt I’ll ever have any hitch with a 3” shaft.

this will reduce the max of the 3” at 21k to a much lower number....may not be a big deal.

No not using the collar. Using a 3 inch receiver . I welded 1/4 plate stock to the outside of the receiver with 5/8 holes that match stock holes perfect to keep it from making stock holes oblong like it has done on my past two trucks. Went to buy a new pin today and every one I looked at have made it China on it. Maybe that has something to do with it. I will look into getting a Hardened 5/8 bolt.

My dealer supplied pin is still straight. I've used it with my 3" Weigh Safe ball mount, 3" Andersen WDH Shank and my 2" Blue Ox WDH shank (using both reducers). The receiver hitch itself is getting oblong holes where the pin inserts into.

Thought about that, but don’t agree running a bead around the outside lip where the two make contact will reduce load bearing capacity any more than inserting shims to stop movement.
I ran a rigging and weight test shop in the Navy and never saw a load test fail at the weld, either.
