ok here it goes. just recently mr expy has had problem starting just after it rained, but it would start after i help the gas in. my dad said water is prolly gettin in somewhere and he would find it latter. ok good, but know when i turn the key it will start but then die automatically. it will start if i hold the gas in, but if i let go it dies. well i drove home from school like this (not good, i know) when i got home 10 mins latter i took my foot off the gas and it diddn't die. ok kewl, but a few days latter it did that again even after it diddnt rain. i have no idea what the problem could be. could someone please help me?
sorry its english i was sorta in a rush. im a fast typer, and just assume im typing it all correctly. (which is bad seeing as hom im a Java programmer)
I also have a 99 Explorer XLT. It seems that whenever I park on an incline overnight (a driveway) that the car will not start in the morning. I just had this happen this morning. Two weeks ago I had the alternator and battery replaced... the problem was there before the change as well, thought that it would have fixed it. Same deal, can pop it into gear and run but it will lose power. Anyone have any idea what is going on? You may contact me with your thoughts-- thanks.
I have the same 99 Exp with a 4.0 SOHC, and I've been having this problem for the last few weeks. Have you replaced the plugs/wires, fuel and air filters, and PCV? That is my plan for this weekend.
I've got 120,000 miles and haven't done any maintenance other than changing the oil and air filter to date, so I figure its due.
i haven't tried that yet... was hoping to find someone who had corrected it so i didn't waste any time. Do you have the "incline" problem too or does it just not turn over all the time?
I had a similar problem on my '98 explorer with starting in cold weather and inclines. Dealer replaced the fuel pump in the tank and have not had a problem since.
I have a '99 Exp with the SOHC, last year I had problems with rough idle, hard starting, check engine light on. The intake manifolds are made of plastic, with "O" rings as seals. Apparently the seals were bad.
I've seen some posts on this board hinting that Ford may be paying for this repair, but that didn't happen for me.
I'm not sure if this would be related as I have a 1997 Explorer XLT AWD 5.0V8. I had this happen last winter, same deal, wouldn't start, tried jumping it, it would sputter but just wouldn't catch. I replaced the battery, and nothing different. Then next day it started a little rough, I went to the store, got some dry gas and injector cleaner and haven't had a problem since. Buy gas in the same two places for the last 4 years.
next time it won't start, pull the distributor cap and see it there is any condensation (dampness) inside. A hot engine cooling off on a humid or cool day could cause this to happen. Some caps have a little breather port to let the moisture out. Had this happening on a Jeep Cherokee, replaced the cap, problem solved.

OOPs, forget what I wrote......wrong type of ignition system.....maybe it will help someone with an older vehicle.
check your other ignition components for any moisture (coil pack, etc)
I had somebody look at my Explorer today. He replaced the Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve. $80 part and $20 labor, so you know it is an easy swap. It is running like new again.

Hey oldcarbuff, I thought I was the only one on this forrum that remembered distributor caps. Maybe it is his points and condenser
