Adaptive steering

I'm interested to know what the general consensus is on adaptive steering. Any reason to avoid it when truck shopping?

Nope. Makes it easier to park the truck since it takes less turns of the steering wheel.

If you plan on lifting your truck it maybe simpler not to get it. I was told by BDS that I needed to calibrate some sensors due to the steering being "wandering" after a 2" leveling kit....I haven't bothered since its not too bad and I kind of got use to it. Just more info for ya.

I have it on my 2018. I love it. Drive one that doesn't have it, then drive one with it. There is a big difference especially city driving.

I’m one to avoid such things but have been fine with it. It was a requirement for something I wanted loading out the truck, probably rain sensing wipers lol.

There should be no issues with lifts provided the truck is fully unpowered during work.

Thanks for all the feedback, it doesn't sound like something that has been known to cause problems, all positive responses.
It's hard sometimes when shopping trucks on the lot, to finds the options you want without some additional that you might not want. Adaptive steering isn't an option I would pay for if I was ordering, but I've seen a few trucks on the lots that have everything I would want plus adaptive steering. It sounds like it's not something I would need to worry about and if I were to get a good enough deal on a truck that has it I might actually appreciate it.

I have a F450 so it has the sharper turning circle also, it works great for me, cant even tell it is working. Where I think it really shines is backing up a trailer. it really makes me look GOOD when I am positioning a trailer in a tight spot.

It could be good for resale value also.

From: Where The Road Takes Me.
I wasn’t going to order it on my 2019 F350. When I took a test drive in a small town in Northern Arizona, I wasn’t even thinking that the truck that I was driving had Adaptive Steering. When I got home and was putting together my truck’s configurations, it dawned on me about the adaptive steering. Then I thought back to how easy and enjoyable it was to turn that test drive truck in tight turns, both leaving the lot and at 90-degree corners. So I included it on my truck. I took delivery in mid-December 2018 and just turned over 7000 miles on 19 April 2019. What I can say is that my truck is easy to drive and park. I also pull a 9500lb conventional travel trailer about two-thirds of the time since we are full time RVers. We both enjoy driving the truck, hooked up and unhooked. I suspect that a lot of the enjoyment comes from the Adaptive Steering, but honestly that is just a guess since I’ve never driven a Ford Super Duty Truck that didn’t have Adaptive Steering. I think it was well worth the cost, and I’d order it again.

I wouldn't get it for three very personal reasons that probably won't affect you in any meaningful way, bit some you asked...

1. It doesn't add any appreciable benefit to me, the only difference I like was backing up my trailer, which is maybe 0.01% of my usage. It one more expense, one more thing to break/maintain, it's just not worth it to me.

2. You can't upgrade to the Raptor steering wheel. Hands down the best thing I've done to this truck.

3. If you level or lift your truck (I've never NOT) there's a lot of guys on the FB pages that have had a lot of issues like twitchy steering, calibrations required regularly, etc.

Like I said... Pretty specific, but they're things to think about.

I’ve never heard of this recalibration issue with adaptive steering.

I lifted my truck with a bds 4in RA loft and added 37in tires and my truck tracks perfectly, and steers just as tight as it did stock. Nothing was ever mentioned of issues nor have I seen evidence of any in ny case. Maybe I’m lucky. Maybe it’s because most people who lift trucks don’t have higher trim packages to keep the cost down so many take a dump on the gizmos and upgrades because they don’t have them. The only part of the trucks I’ve heard people had a few issues with was the adaptive cruise control and getting it lined up correctly.

Ha, there's definitely a lot of people that don't have any issues at all. But there's quite a few that have. In fact, if you took the time to read this thread there's one person that has that issue here in this thread. Of such a small sample set and to already have one here...

We have it on our Edge, it's great on the car, truck does not have it. My biggest concern with all the new technology is if/when it breaks out of warranty with the vehicle be a "Throw Away" because it's cost prohibitive to fix it. We bought the Ford Premium 8 year extended warrantee with both the Edge and F250 just for that fact.

I'll add my $.02 worth...my 2017 F-250 KR came with it (I bought it used in January 2018). Initially, I didn't want it as I saw it as "something else that can break). After driving this truck (it has 40K on it now), I have to say I really like it. It really does make a difference in tight quarters maneuvering (and trailer backing). I did have an issue and discovered that the adaptive steering is very sensitive to low battery voltage. One of my batteries went low (unbeknownst to me) and I started having adaptive steering faults. I did a bit of research, replaced both factory batteries with good ones (the factory batteries are really bad), and the problem was fixed.

What I really noticed was that when I had the adaptive steering fault, it disabled the feature and wow, what a difference! I really do recommend the option. I didn't realize how much I liked it.
