So based on the pics you posted, there's a memory switch on the driver's door (the steering wheel switches confirm that it had the options package that included memory function)

the memory feature was external to the seat, and I think if you look carefully at the seat motors you'll find that the motor pack is marked with "MEM" somewhere. You should look closely under the seat for a black or silver box labelled "heated seat control module" or similar on both seats. if you've got that module, you'll be able to make the seats heat up, otherwise you're kinda SOL.

I see, gosh darn it this was one of those situations where I was too excited upon finding the seats and didn’t even consider looking for memory seat modules etc on it, now I see the steering wheel controls that you pointed out; I was looking at the door panel before you said that and thought nah there’s no way it’s memory!

Ok so currently my drivers xlt seat is a power seat. The new limited seats fortunately are the exact same (with the exception of the added heat function) with manual recline and the memory option which I’ll just omit. It sounds like if i locate the heated seat module on both seats, and transfer the drivers side seat cushion from my new seat to the xlt base, all I will need to do is figure out wiring for an add on heated seat switch that I can mount later to use that feature. It would seem that the passenger side connector just needs 12v power and ground by tying into the drivers side harness. Not sure what all 4 pins are for currently though (see pic). I’ll make sure to take good photos of the seat base swap, hopefully I can figure this out without too much pain. Anyone still have access to the seat wiring diagrams? Autozone seems to have purged them from their database.

Passenger seat connector.

On second thought, I should be able to swap the seat base side panels and utilize the factory heated seat switch on the XLT base. Do these seat heaters require a hi/lo function or are they just on/off?

Another option to consider is to move the wiring harness from the XLT seat onto the Limited seat, that should functionally bypass the memory part assuming everything plugs together. You'll have a couple leftover wires in the main connector that go to the heater, but you can cut those out of the loom and re-use the seat side to rig your own wiring for that.

Caveat: this is based on my knowledge on the Explorer, and observations from junkyard trucks. I do know that without that module, you're not getting the heaters to work without crafting your own control unit via switches and relays

The module has 4 lines: constant hot, hot-in-run, ground, and signal to the dash light. The hot-in-run wakes up the module and lets you turn on the heater, which draws through the constant hot. The signal puts out 5v+ when the heater is running, but is not essential.

I think there's a heating pad in the backrest too? if so, the unit has to have both pads connected and operational in order to work.

I've not had any better luck than you at finding excursion-specific diagrams...

If you provide power to the module and leave the wiring from the module to switch intact, you should be able to put the Limited trim with the switches and all right onto the XLT motor base.

As far as I know, there's no provisions for adjustment. There's a thermal cutoff built in to the heating pad, and when it gets too hot, it cuts the circuit and turns off the module. Newer versions did not have the module on the seat, but rather built into the climate control system, and those allowed the automatic temp control to vary how hot the seat was depending on how cold the cabin was and what the set temperature in the cabin was. Pretty complex system.

I have the 2003 shop wiring manual. I’ll take a look and see what it has in it. Not sure it’ll be the same, but it’s worth a shot. I’ll post up pictures if I have them.

At this point I think this seat swap conversation needs to move into its own thread, it really does not belong here in the craigslist finds thread.

2001 2WD V10 XLT, 135k, some body damage and won't start (ad says alternator overcharged and blew "computer"). But for $2100, it's probably the cancer-free donor car of some rust-belters dreams.

About a half hour away from me if anyone wants me to go take a look.
