I have a 2019 F350 Superduty. When we ordered the truck we paid to have a GPS included.
Obviously since we have a F350, we purchased it to pull (we pull a 5th wheel camper).
The GPS is horrible for directions when pulling a large 5th wheel. I do not want to have to purchase an external "trucker"
or RV GPS and we shouldn't have to in our opinion. We would be willing to pay for a special upgrade in software if necessary.
Does anyone know if there is an update that can be purchased or any option to be able to use the Ford built in "Purchased"
GPS with the truck?
I'm not aware of any upgrade. I did a little research to see if there were ways to import pre-planned routes, etc. and so far I've not found anything. We have a Garmin RV-660 w/lifetime maps and traffic so we will be continuing to use that with the new truck when towing the trailer. The factory NAV seems to do OK for non-towing use but I prefer the RV-specific features of the Garmin for any towing-related travel.
I doubt there is anything available to update the factory GPS, but besides "horrible for directions", what specifically is horrible about it? Mine has done pretty good, but certainly not perfect. But then again, the old Nuvi I had wasn't perfect either.
Possibly one of your smart phone app maps will work.
I can do a pre planed trip on Google maps and connect my phone to the truck to display Google maps on the trucks screen.
This is one of the reasons I went to a truck camper. We didnt like to limit where we could go.
There is no perfect GPS. I pull a 45ft fifth wheel and I never had any problem with the factory NAV. In fact I prefer it to waze/maps routing...
I do my own route planning. The trick is to do it before you leave. I check that when I'm not in motion, I have all the time I need , no stress and if I'm not sure , I check street view. Never had any problem , also the ride is not stressful when you know where you are going !
I just installed a Pioneer head unit in my truck and it has GPS in it. It has options for car and truck routes...I assume one would want to use the truck option for towing a large 5th wheel.
Maybe an aftermarket unit is worth a look if you are that unhappy with the OEM?
I run the CoPilot GPS app on my phone (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/copi...504677517?mt=8) with an RV profile when towing, and so far, the factory NAV has pretty much agreed with it. It's a lot better than my old aftermarket NAV units I used in my Ram (first Pioneer, later Kenwood), none of those ever agreed with CoPilot. Ford one so far hasn't steered me wrong. I'm not ready to trust it 100% yet, so I'll still run CoPilot in conjunction, but it is pretty reliable.

Thank you,[/QUOTE
Does Apple or Google maps offer something for truckers or RV users?

I also use CoPilot and find it pretty good. I like the RV specific profile as it keeps me off roads with low bridges.
