Is there a way to check if a CC is bad by using a IR (temp) gun on it and the muffler to see if there is too much back pressure? I checked the site but didn't see this info if its feasible. If its possible does anyone know what kind of numbers I should be looking for? Does it vary too much from different vehicles and CC's?
My wife's astro is a city vehicle with little highway miles (almost all city @ 160,000 miles) with a noisy CC and she thinks its bad. I can push with my hand on the CC and the rattling eases up so I figure a heat shield or something inside. But my '92 E-350 has a special oval hookup to the exhaust and will be a bit of a pain to by-pass to check Why they bottle necked these down to 2 1/4" after the CC is beyond me.
Yes - normally cat con outlet temps should be roughly0-50 F higher than inlet. If the cat con is plugged, the inlet will be higher then outlet. When I checked mine temps were like 350 in 360 out according to my fuzzy memory.
