How much oil is your engine using? Has your MPG changed? What’s the color of your fuel filter?

Thanks for the advise. Other than tarring into things what are some methods of diagnosing this issue that you have heard of or seen?

Build a boost leak detector and put it to use. A quick search will show you how.
Tugly has a ton of good diagnostic information in his signature. Click on his links and start reading.

A good “upgrade” to go along with need maintenance that will prevent you from being stranded roadside is rebuilding your fuel bowl, fuel pressure regulator and lines.

dieselorings.com has all the good stuff you need.

i suggest “upgrading” the cast pressure regulator to their billet one, the cast unit is fragile and fails.
you can also upgrade the passenger side head fuel line clamp as it rubs a hole in the line, a good “upgrade” is a zip tie.
both of those are leave you stranded items but you should also check your fuel pressure and rebuild the regulated with a new poppet, seals and spring, this will restore fuel pressure and performance that is typically degraded by 100k miles from low pressure. New parker seals and o rings all around is recommended.

I didn’t see you ask how much oil the motor uses. Typically it’s about a quart or so every oil change which I do every 5000 miles
