i have a 73 f250 with a 360 in it. ive recently noticed it has some kind of knock in the motor not sure exactly where it was coming from if it was wrist pin or the actual rod or something else. so before i tore the engine down i replaced all the bolts on the manifold along with new gaskets and also the donuts for the down pipes. after i did that is when i noticed a knock of some sort. so i decided to pull the motor and i tore it down last night as i was pulling it apart i carefully looked everything over and the my eye it looked good fore the most part but i know i wont be able to see everything. i pulled all the pistons out inspected the rods and nothing seemed bad. but im planing on sending the rods to the machine shop to be checked i was going to replace the pistons wrist pins rings all the bearings also. and i was inspecting the cylinder walls i could not feel anything with my fingers or nails. i know i probably wont be able so feel much but on some of the walls there were some faint vertical lines. also could see some cross hatching in them to. i also noticed there was what looked like to me some residue on the walls i dont know if coolant got in there and kinda burnt on the walls. so before i go any further i wanted to know what to look for on the walls and what a factory bore is on it? and if there is a possibility of dinglberrying the walls to clean them up. but i dont know what my tolerances are to be able to run stock new pistons and rings. or if dingle berrying it is not a good way to go about it. i was planning on doing a rebuild kit from summit all stock parts. just need some clarification on it so see what i can and cant do to the cylinder walls and the best way to maeuser it.i appreciate any help with this thank you.

When were you hearing the knock? Under load could be an exhaust leak.

Probably an exhaust leak. I'd have the manifold checked for being slightly warped. If it is you could either have it resurfaced or go with a set of headers.

I haven’t really ran or even drivin it when I sit drive it the exhausted was rusted out so it was just loud to begin with so I don’t know if it was making a knock than but I got new exhaust on it and like I said I did all new manifold gaskets and new bolts and I’m not doubting you but it really did not sound like an exhaust leak. Definitely sounded like it was coming from internally from the motor but I could be wrong. But no it was at an idle and when I revd it up

Have the manifolds checked to see if they are true.

Ok well I was planning on doing headers anyways but I won’t ahead and tore the motor down and was just going to do a rebuild on it. More or less for peace of mind so at this point I want to clean the cylinder walls up and I was planning on dinggel berrying the cylinders but I’m just trying to make sure that I don’t pull to much out of the walls so I was trying to figure out the best way to measure the walls and the tolerances I can have with putting new stock pistons in and rings
Thanks

By the way, are you sure this is a 360 and not a 390?

Have to measure to be sure. But if the cylinders are not too bad a dingelball hone and new piston rings will get you a long ways. Many an engine was freshened up this way over the years.

Is the casting number on the crank 2U, 2UA, 2T, or 2TA?

You have a 360 then. Since you have it all apart I'd consider converting it to a 390 by putting in a 390 crank and rods.
