Can't download codes

Can't download codes
93 F250 2wd 460 f.i eng E4OD trans. Truck was running good, parked it for 2 weeks and the battery went dead. Charged battery and started up truck, now have CEL on , black smoke out of exhaust and tranny takes a couple of seconds to engage. Bought OBD1scanner to download codes but scanner wouldn't read anything. Tried paper clip trick to count flashes, still nothing. Checked the ground connection for scanner, reads zero to ground . Any ideas on how to retrieve codes or what may have happened?

computer maybe toast. do you get ANY codes?
When my computer went it had the same symptoms as yours. billowing black smoke, surging idle and just general doggedness.
pull the computer open it up and look for leaking/corroded capacitors.
My computer took a dive while I was driving. Wasn't fun.
