Manual trans guys--help needed.

I have a used zf5. I split the case and installed new p.shaft bearings. I had the flywheel resurfaced and a new Ram clutch, slave cylinder, new pilot shaft bearing. When I start it there is a growl in the bellhousing with the trans in neutral. The growl vanishes when I push the clutch. I had a bear of a time installing the trans, and am thinking now that the growl is either a damaged p.shaft bushing/bearing that sits in the crank, or I messed up when I installed the bearings on the p.shaft in the trans.

How do know where the sound is coming from?

I’m not really a transmission expert, however I think it might be your clutch. It could possibly use a little adjusting at the fork. I had to lengthen mine (the bolt on the fork) to push it farther out so the clutch would disengage sooner
