New guy here! I currently have a 2016 5.0 F150 and tow a '17 Jay Feather RLSW. I have decided to try going with a dedicated truck for towing and will be looking at a very clean and well maintained '99 F350 V10 Dually 2WD with 71k on the clock. I did the usual internet research and am familiar with the known issues with this platform. The spark plug inserts have been addressed on this vehicle, it has the optional towing package and airbags that ae in working condition. I will be seeing the truck in the morning and if I'm happy with it, will purchase it. The truck is way overkill for my 5400# trailer and I'm ok with that!!
I am curious to hear of any anecdotal info / suggestions / etc from anyone running a similar rig.
I've had a couple of early F350 V10s. An '02 and currently an '01. I love them. Unfortunately I think they love the gas station more than they love me, but I knew that going in.
I own a 99 4wd dually. I've had it for 3 years and had a 99 2wd F350 for 2 years before that. I tow a 31 foot 5th wheel in the mountains. This is my favorite truck and I have no intention of upgrading to a newer truck.
Well, I am the proud owner of a new (to me) '99 V10 dually! Truck is in as close to new condition as can be expected for a 20 year old truck. Really looking forward to towing with this!
I would suggest swapping the radiator out for one with a OTW transmission cooler since you plan to tow.
Upgrading to the 02+ headlamps will help visibility as well.
I installed the OTW radiator based on Bently Coop's recommendation a year or two ago. Great advice! I also installed a 6.0 transmission oil cooler, and just this past weekend installed a pair of electric fans on the oil cooler. As mentioned earlier I pull a 5th wheel trailer in the mountains of Oregon, so I believe I give this transmission as much of a stress test as possible. I'm very cautious of the transmission temperature when I'm towing.
I wouldn't expect you to have the transmission cooling problems I have but I would definitely recommend a transmission oil temperature gauge if you don't already have one.
Thanks for the replies and suggestions. Definitely going with a transmission temp gauge and will be upgrading the radiator as recommended this season. I just replaced all the tires even though the tread would have passed inspection. The tires were manufactured in 2004 and as far as I'm concerned they were way past the "use by date." Definitely upgrading the sound system! Also, re: the trans cooler, what is recommended? what is 6.0 cooler?
First impressions on this truck? Absolutely love it! I'm surprised at how smooth it is, love the effortless power and overall condition of this 20 year old vehicle. I'm way "over trucked" for what I'm towing, a 5400# TT, but this gives me room to upgrade if the need arises. Plus, can you really have too much truck? I have a 2016 5.0 F150 that towed this just fine, but did work a bit in the mountains in NH and VT.

Transmission temperature can be monitored through the OBD2 port under the dash, likely near your brake controller.
I had a Scanguage 2 and now have a SCT Livewire with 5star tunes. Some prefer the Torque Pro app or Forscan with a dedicated tablet.
6.0 Cooler is from the 03.5-07 6.0 diesel equipped trucks transmission cooler. The Radiator with OTW should be a higher priority than the 6.0 cooler as the V10's already come with a larger cooler then the 7.3 guys.
A speaker upgrade may be the ticket for your sound system, it's where I started. I used some inexpensive Kicker 6X8" for the doors and rear cab. Our 99's have a couple different plugs available for the speaker's so if you order through Crutchfield they sent me a plug that didn't work, however they quickly sent out a new plug pack. You may check the doors prior to order and make a note.

Are you running a weight distribution hitch?
The 99-01 Trucks and Excursions have smaller bolts resulting in a lower rating. Upgrading the hardware will change the effective rating but not the sticker if you rent or anything.
