These trucks are very dependable, imo. Mine has almost 102K and I have never had major problems.
Gas mileage varies from 10 to 13 - with extremes from 8 to 15. I get 11.3 to 12.2 depending (I think) on the brands of gasoline I get at the time.
I do believe that the ESOF on the '99s were a little more difficult to manage, but once you get the hang of it, and learn how to use it, it works just fine.
Look through the wheel wells at the exhaust manifolds. You're looking at the condition of the exhaust manifold studs, or if they are even there. On the early '99 I traded in a couple of months ago (3) studs were gone on each side and an exhasut leak was developing on the right side. Only the head snaps off so you have the stud shaft to grab and get it out, but that can't be done until the manifold is removed.
Also check and see if the plugs have been changed.
Milage, my '99 got 12. It also got 12 on the freeway towing a 7k pound trailer for 3 hours of pure E-way driving. If the deal is right grab it.
I love my 99. I have SC, LB 4x4 V-10 w/110k miles. Drives nice. I have put some money in it to make it as nice as it is. I get 11 most of the time. 9 towing a 7k boat on the highway and 14 on the highway not towing. Good dependable truck. If the price is right go for it. That's why I went with the 99, bought it in Jan for $10.9k. the 99 diesels were starting around $16K. That's a lot of gas.........
my 2WD 98 E-350 has 115K, I bought it used with 40K and drive it alot. I have got as high as 16, and as low as 11 solo driving. I change the oil alot, put LOTS of tires on it and still love the sound of that engine at 5,000 rpm. Even 5 years later and 2 new engine mods to increase hp on the newer models I still love that big, old white box for that first edition of the V10 engine. I tow a 24' bunkhouse with all 5 kids, their friends and all their gear and never met a mountain pass I didn't like. Check the exhaust manifolds, check for new plugs, do all the normal checking into then drive it like ya stole it. You'll love it.
I have a 99 250 135k sb sc and its a sweet truck.I am going to sell it but not because its a bad truck. Just ready for a new one with a little more towing power. I would check a couple things. Check front ball joints and make sure front rotors aren't warped to bad. Mine were bad , but I live in the Mountains so hopefully yours are good. I have had to replace front rotors and upper and lower ball joints. Enjoy it if you get it..
