We are trying to replace the water pump on a 1986 F250 6.9 diesel. Trying to take off the fan and the fan clutch is free spinning from the bolt and pulley keeps spinning. Also do you have to have the pulley pressed on to the water pump or is it just bolted on.
You can go to autozone or possibly one of the other stores has them also, and rent the special tools need to get it off. The fan unscrews off the pump. You will need the special large wrench and the other tool that holds the pulley still. You will probably have to smack the wrench with a deadblow or something to break it loose. This is hard to get in your head sometimes, probably less of a problem with someone that is not a mechanic, but THE THREADS ARE LEFT HAND THREADS. So to take it off you have to smack it to the drivers side to get it loose.
The the pulley just unbolts like any other.
I spent 20 minutes once trying to get my clutch fan started back on after working on my truck, and I finally realized I was trying to turn it to the driver's side like it had regular threads. Turned it backwards and it went right on, what a dummy I was.
