When marking the timing mark on the balancer. I like to use a white paint marker/pen and continue the mark down the front and into the center hub section. That makes it easy to check in the future and see if the outer dampner rings starts spinning. If the marks no longer stay lined up between the center hub and outer ring, it's slipping.
Your balancer slipping has nothing to do with your timing, unless it slipped and you retimed it based on the timing mark that's moved. Then, you'll only think you're at one setting when you're really at another.
However, once it starts moving, you have no idea how much. It might have only moved 1 degree, and you are retarding the timing by setting it by the timing mark. Or, it may have spun almost all the way around, and and by timing to the mark, you might have added 10 - 30 degrees of timing.
There's really no way to know.
That's why it's best to check if it's slipping, and replace it if it is. Bringing the engine to TDC and then checking to see if it's pointed at 0 is about the fastest way.
If it is, replace it ASAP. Your timing being off is the least of your concerns. Having that fully separate and come off at highway speeds will equal a bad day.
When i put it together, i had it at tdc verified with head off. U can see in photos on previous pages. Which put the balancer dead on 0, i moved it to 10* and dropped dizzy in and pointed at #1. upon firing it up i set to 10*(it was within 1*) When i checked it to back it down to 8* couple weekends ago it was still dead on 10 telling me it hasnt slipped since i put her back together. I guess that rules that idea out. Looking back at photos the balancer rubber doesnt appear to have any cracks or signs of degradation.

This was an awesome read, I'm lost on about 3/4 of the jargon since my skill level is still novice. However I was glued to the screen reading all about this breakdown, I just got my self a 1990 F-150 custom with the 4.9 300-6. Going to be changing the oil pan gasket this weekend, should be fun in the cold.
