Back when I had an '04, i changed the speakers out for Rockford Fosgate prime series. Inexpensive, and great sound. They worked well with the factory stereo and then with an aftermarket. I believe they are 6X8 for all doors. If you check crutchfield.com, or my favorite sonicelectronix.com, enter your vehicle info, they will tell you what size speakers you have.
Stock speakers are 6x8. You can use 5x7's also, a little bigger selection. The better option is to put some 5.25" adapter plates from Metra, either 82-5600 or 82-5601 which will allow you to run either 5.25" coax's or separates. A lot more choices and better sound. I second the Rockford product but I would step up to the punch series. I sold a lot of the punch stuff when I was a dealer for them. More than alpine or hertz.
Great, good info and well taken.. THANK YOU for sure.. can't wait to hear the difference, I've been wanting to do this for ten years and always get side tracked or de-railed. SO, I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it, I'm going to ........
Also a neat little trick if you don't know already. They're is a very easy way to tell which wire is positive and which is negative. I never pay extra for the speaker adapters, I always just cut off the factory plugs. Grab a AA battery and your factory speaker. Plug in the factory plug that you just cut off. Attach one of the wires to the positive on the battery and one side to the negative of the battery. If the speaker pushes out, you have the polarities correct. If the speaker sucks in, you have the positive and the negative backwards.
I put Pioneer 4-way 6x8" speakers in all four spots in my CC and that made a big difference. I wasn't looking to break the bank or do a lot of modifications to upgrade the system. I just wanted to update the speakers for better sound.
I'm not a Pioneer fan but they were a good price and were a perfect fit (there's not a lot of room between the stock magnet and the window glass to begin with).
Back in the day I did things the way Vans,ak did...cut the connector and either soldered the wires on or crimped spade connections on. I ended up getting the plug to connector adaptors from Crutchfield.com. Not that expensive and it was worth it to me to save the time and keep the OEM connector on the harness.
yes, I've been using that trick to find polarity for about 50 years now.. its quite handy when needed.. Thanks tho, others reading this will gather our little secret and use it.. as you mentioned, the space between the magnet and window isn't great, has anyone mounted the speakers on the panel rather than the inside of the frame work? I was more concerned with sound coming through the small holes in the door panel vs, the speaker grills.. hadn't thought about the spacing behind the magnet yet, since I haven't opened the door up to install yet.. (speakers on order).. and, If you did mount them, well actually, makes no difference if you did or not, what about tweeters being mounted on or near the door panel, even under the edge of the dash I suppose? and, another question, SUB-WOOFER? anyone do anything with this to enhance the bass effect? not looking for volume, but some bass balance, and these new speakers my perform so well it wouldn't be needed..
I wouldn't worry about the holes very much. But if you wanted, one thing I used to do is install separates in these trucks. Mount the driver in the stock location and mount the tweeter in the little panel that's sits right above the main door panel. You can use 5.25's or some companies make 5x7 separates.
