I have a 2000 Excursion, 2WD, V10. My husband took it hunting during a very rainy weekend and sunk my baby in the mud . I hate to say it but a Dodge saved the Ex from a dip in the lake as it was going downhill backwards. smh,,,,,,,,,,,, My husband has vowed for that to never happen again and is looking for a 4x4. We are looking at a 2015 F350 Super Duty 6.2L V8, 4x4. I have the vin but I can't figure out what axel this truck has. I'm trying to see it's towing capacity. I have a Cougar trailer that weighs @ 7300. And yes, my husband has told me that he is putting a winch on the front and back of the new truck.
The VIN does not include the axle code unless you can look up the as-built configuration. I don't know if the Etis site still works or not.
Otherwise, you have to get to the sticker on the door or door jamb and get the AXLE code off of it or someone has to crawl under the truck and try and read the code off the tags on the axle. Getting the code off the sticker is easiest.
And for Gods sakes, don’t ever admit on a public forum that a Dodge pulled your truck out of the mud.
Crawl under the truck at the rear and on the back of the rear differential there should be a metal tag that has the axle ratio stamped on it.

Thank you in advance
This truck will have no problem pulling that 7300 lb trailer regardless of the axle ratio. 3.73 or 4.30 are the only two options with the 6.2 gasser and either one wil be fine. Even if the 7300 is the empty weight, what......10,000 GVW? Still just fine!
I have a f350 6.2 with 3.73 ratio and it pulls our 7500lb camper very well. That's not a very big camper for these trucks. I previously pulled it with an f150 and technically it was within the weight limit, but the super duty does a much better job.
So we got the 2015, F350, 6.2. Seems like a really nice truck. My husband is spending day 2 alone with his truck. Guess that is what comes with 43 years of marriage. Anyway, I thought the Ex was huge, this truck makes the Ex look like a commute car. Seems our trailer hitch will not be lining up with the height difference. Do we need a new hitch or is there some kind of adaptor? We still have the Ex but it has to go to dealer. Last week we took it in as the blinkers had stopped working. They had to remove the steering column to fix that and now the windshield wipers are not working. sheesh!

I know, I know, it hurts real bad to say it, but gotta give props where props are due.
Depending on the tongue weight of your trailer you may not need the WD hitch anymore. I had one from when I pulled our camper with the f150 and when we got the f350 I stopped using the bars as it barely squatted. Still use the anti-sway bar though. All you probably need to do is adjust the height of your hitch ball.
