Borg Warner 1345 Transfer Case refill
The specs call for 6 to 6.5 pints of ATF, or about 3 to 3.25 quarts. I put in 2 quarts 4 oz and I'm up to the fill hole. I'm almost a quart shy from spec. Anybody else have this issue?
Should I jack up the rear and see how much more I can get in? I'm parked on level ground for the check and fill now.

Mine takes slightly more than 2 quarts to the fill hole. Would like to hear from folks out there how many quarts they get in theirs.

Can't find any information on a 1345 HD Transfer case. Only the 1345. Lots of stuff on the internet on the 1345 including the capacity listed as 3 to 3.25 quarts. I have three Chiltons that overlap models and years on F-series trucks and cover the 1345, all list it with a capacity of 3 or 3.25 quarts. My owner's manual lists it at 3.25 quarts. It only took 2.125 quarts. No mention of 1345 HD. Go figure.
The only mention I could find on an HD version comes from Wikipedia, where they mention the 4407 as being an HD version of the 4406:

UPDATE:
I was hoping to hear back from anyone that has serviced their 1345 on how much fluid it took. I've owned my truck since new. Way back many years ago I removed the fill plug to check the TC fluid level, I think book says to check every 5000 miles. As soon as I got the plug to the last thread fluid was coming out of the plug so I reinserted it right away. Full and good! Well after that I thought there is no need to check the level again unless I see some leakage. It's never leaked a drop. I had the ford dealer do the changes to the T case every 100k miles. I checked the level each time and found it to be overfilled and coming out the check plug...reinserting it every time...calling it good!
This is the first time I changed the fluid. It was still over filled and plenty of fluid came out the fill plug. I anticipated that since I had done checks of the fluid level and was ready to catch some fluid. I'd say about half a quart or so came out the top plug. Hard to say exactly since a lot perched up on the skid plate filling it before running off into the drain pan I had ready.
So my Transfer case has been filled to the gills and then some since new. When these transfer cases were new I'll bet that they were bench filled with the spec amount of fluid prior to installation in the trucks. Most dealer shops use power pumps and bulk fluid for servicing. My hunch is that the filler hose they use is about the same diameter as the fill plug and they pump in the spec amount and put the plug in before much can run back out. It's the only thing I can figure since my T case has always been over filled when checked.
So in keeping with past experience, knowing that the fluid was always above the check level plug, and having 400k trouble free miles, I decided to put in additional fluid beyond the 2.125 quarts to the fill plug. I jacked up the rear of the truck and then pumped in additional fluid, about 2.25 qts total to fill it to the fill plug while the rear was jacked up, Then using my hand pump I pumped as fast as I could till I had a bit over 2.5 qts in the transfer case. Not much was coming out since the filler hose was blocking the exit...then quickly inserted the fill plug capturing about 2.5 quarts total in the transfer case. So once again I am overfilled, but not more than the spec amount of 3 to 3.25 qts.
I'm going on the theory that slightly more fluid is better for cooling and lubricating. That is the way it came from the factory...overfilled...and after dealer servicing...overfilled...relative to the fill plug. My thinking is that the closer to spec your fill amount is on the 1345 the better. I wouldn't do that on the differentials or the transmission, those amounts were very close to spec anyway.
But then again more than one person has said I'm a half a quart shy of a full case...
