Transfer Case fluids

Got a 1990 Bronco, full size, 4x4. No owner's manuals. Putting in a new tranny. Need to know the fluid capacity and exactly what goes in the transfer case. Any help would be appreciated.

The transfer case takes a little more than a pint of ATF - same as you are dumping into the transmission. My favorite way of doing it is to put about one and a half pints in the transfer case on the bench. Then once it's installed and the truck is parked on a level surface - pull the top drain plug and let the little extra come out. I don't have a pump and find putting atf into the transfer case while installed a real pain in the butt.

Be sure to use the correct ATF. Transmission dipstick will help for compability clues.

For a 90, dextron III works fine,it isn't until the limited slip came out in the late 90's that you have to worry about it, you could run type F in it if it made you happy.
