Found this in the engine bay...

I was investigating why my engine sounds so loud when when ever I apply the gas, when I spotted this tucked into a corner on the left side of the engine bay. Looked around to see what it it might be from and found a tube that fits that was pushing a lot of air that looks like it may connect to the exhaust system somewhere.

I looked up the code thats stamped on the bracket and found this Ford Silencer Assembly , ended up going to the local Advanced Auto to see what they had in their system & buy a Haynes...come to find out it's not in their system anywhere & that they stopped carrying Haynes manuals.

Anyone know what this may attach too? There isn't any place on the intake showing where it might connect to so I'm lost. I have a Haynes on order but if anyone has some insight I could use it!

Also, does anyone else have issues with loud engine noise in their E150's? I thought it might be a bad fan clutch but don't want to waste money on parts that won't fix the noise issue.

That is the output muffler for the air pump and it's not your problem. What kind of noise is the engine making?

Thanks,

The noise just seems like a really loud engine or I had thought the fan. Seems to really make a lot of noise when applying gas to get the van moving & continues at driving speed. Is it possible that the fan clutch is stuck in the "on" position? Or maybe a clogged cat would cause the engine to sound loud?

Might be the noise if the air pump is putting out air and it's disconnected from the Thermactor system. It'll sound like a chain saw.

Just to be sure, should there be another tube connected to that going to someplace else or does it just sit in the engine bay?

Thanks, I was able to find this Thread when searching the Thermactor System. I guess the end of this part is supposed to be open to the engine compartment?

I re-attached the part to the tube from the smog pump but the engine still seems loud to me. Is it just me or do these van's have loud engines?

I'd suspect your fan clutch based on your description, it should move freely by hand if you were to try and rotate it by hand with the engine off and cold. One end of that muffler should be attached to a hose that connects to the air pump, if you have a hose that exhausts a lot of air when the engine is running that is where it should go.

Yea the fan isn't loose at all & does feel stiff when moving it by hand like it's gummed up.

Looks like the new fan clutch did the trick! So much nicer driving down the road now compared to before. I think I might actually be able to enjoy driving the van now. Going now to have the new tires I bought installed to see if that will help the handling.
