Question Tailgate Step Limitations

I have a 2019 f250 Lariat. It has the tailgate step. I popped it open to use it and it has a bunch of warning stickers all over it. 350lb max including anything you're holding. I'm a big dude, around 385lbs. Yes, I know I'm fat, no you don't have to tell me.

My concern is, what would happen if I would step up on the tailgate step. Is it going to crumple because I'm over it's stated capacity, or is it going to be fine, the engineers are just being safe?

The rating accounts for some margin of error. It’s not like if you put 349lbs on the step it will be fine. If you put 351lbs on it, it will crumble.

Given how expensive these tailgates are I wouldn't push my luck. At the very least, in your situation I wouldn't be carrying anything when using the step.

I know the tailgate alone for replacement from Ford is just shy of $1000

I think you would be fine for occasional use, but if you exceed the rated capacity on a regular basis the metal may begin to fatigue.

Go to your local dealership and try theirs. It may end up bending and then would be hard to put back into tailgate.

This is it right here. You see the same kind of posts when talking about weight limits over on the towing forums, that magically, you can run 1# under 24/7 with no effects, but go 1# over and all hell breaks lose.
Fact of the matter is, the more weight you apply, the more it will stress the metal, and the quicker it will fail. So, in your case, instead of lasting, say 7 years (no scientific measurement, just a ballpark guess) it might last only 5. Or maybe all 7, who knows? That it will fail eventually is inevitable, the exceeding the limit just makes it harder to guess, when.

Climbing up that step while holding something Honestly its all I can do to climb that thing while holding onto the pole.
I remember when we were told not to sit on the tailgate and now they put that step in which extends out even further. Anyone notice that the cable on each side it a bit thicker than it used to be on older trucks?

A wild "ask" guess on my part: Be gentle with them, don't bounce, jump, or do back flips off them. Place your feet apart so as to not concentrate load in the center... I think you'll be OK. If not, I change my mind!

An additional factor is that the weight capacity isn't just for the step, it's for how the step is connected and held on the tailgate, so going over capacity can stress the attachments and the locations where they are placed. Likely to mean it will wear in over use over time.

You will be fine using it. There are factors of safety designed into it. Would I suggest you go on it carrying a 100 lbs of something, yeah only if you are really careful to step up or down gently on it.
