Several years (1997 maybe) ago I started to buy a Remington Model 7 stainless/synthectic rifle in either .308 or 7mm-08. I wish I had. It was $425 new then. This is the model 7, not the 700.
Now the damn thing is over $700! I was going to buy one for my 12 year-old son to hunt with, but I don't know now. Anyone know where I can buy it for considerably cheaper?
Wow, rifles have gotten expensive. I have a Ruger all weather that I am very happy with but it costs only marginally less than the Remington now. If you don't HAVE to have a Remington, I would suggest a Savage. They make a stainless version and are quite a bit cheaper. I know several people with Savage rifles and they shoot very well.
a Remington Model 7, where do you live!!!? I wouldn't give 300 for an M7. Darn, come to Colorado and go to a Wal-mart, you can pick up an M700 for less than 500. The Savage is a good suggestion, my 110 in 30-06 will do .75" groups at 100 yards when I do my part.
Id go with the "new" Remington Model 710
VERY good gun.
I've had 2...
Bought one when it first came out, it was stolen, got a replacement.
Very good accuracy right out of the box...
I can shoot a dime stuck into a wood post at 100 yards... Shoot it, move over a bit, shoot the other side out of it
It runs about 375 at Walmart with a Scope.
Remington lists it for 425 but Ive not paid that for either one, and I got them both new.
Very good gun, synthetic stock... and I have had no problem with it...
The rifle is for my 12 year old. I like the size, weight, quality of the M7. I have a Remington M700 .300 WinMag with muzzle brake, trigger job, McMillian stock, Swavorski scope. Great rifle, but lugging it thru the woods is a little much for him.
I'm looking for a smaller, lighter, but just as good rifle compared to my M700.
BTW, my fatherin-law in Texas found it for $670. My uncle in NC found it for $695. Apparently, it's a more expensive gun than most M700s. Why, I don't know.
Wahoo, If its for your 12 year old..
May I suggest a 30.30 caliper gun?
THey are light weight, and shoot very good also.
I know it's not in the category of what you were looking for
but it's lightweight.
The Model 710 I suggested isnt lightweight, but its not near as heavy as some of the guns I've owned.
Good luck and happy hunting
Your son is awful young to be lugging such a big gun at all. He isn't going to have fun, then he isn't going to want to go hunting. Seriously, if weight is a concern and your son is big enough to handle some kick, get him a 20 gauge, they start right at $200 for a good pump gun.
Most of the Hunter safety students that come through our course are right at 11-12-13 years, and most are IMO a little too young to start hunting, I think you should take your son along for a couple more years, you will enjoy it more and he won't have a bad memory of getting so tired or a scope scar.
Good luck in whatever you decide. Hopefully your state offers Hunter Safety courses.
My oldest grand daughter took her first deer last year at age 11. She used a Ruger in .280 at around 200 yards. My son started her shooting targets with a .22, then the .280 to get her used to the report and kick. She has fired his .300 Mag but didn't much care for it. She is looking forward to this coming season.
Dono
an NEF handi-rifle, they are light, come in many calibers, are single shot's and can be had for less than 300 bux. Check here. You can also have diffrent calibers barrels fitted later on.
Sorry the link no longer works.
I would go with a Savage in .243 for a 12 year old. You won't get to much money wrapped up in it and the kick is very tolerable. If used for hunting the Savage stacks up extremely well against Remington and Ruger.
Go to Wal-Mart. Ask to look at the order book. They can order most anything at great prices. The .270 is a great all around rifle. Easy shooting and ammo priced cheap. 30-06 is another fine choice.
Are you definitely looking to buy new?
Gander Mountain sells good used guns, if there's one in your area. I 'm sure other places do too. Might find your M7 that way.
A 30-30 is a good gun, I have two. Marlin makes a stainless one. Last I checked they were selling new from $375-$430 depending on where you go.
Wahoo
Where are you at? I may be able to beat that price. My brother and dad own a shop. If you are not in KY then we would have to go through a dealer in your state but that depends on the price I guess. I will check into it and let you know if I come up with anything. Later
