Power Steering Pump Question

Have a78 F150, 460, C6 long bed. I'm in the process of changing the power steering hoses. I started to loosen the return line at the pump and the back of the pump moves around some. To my line of thinking nothing on the outside of the pump should move. Am I right? If so suggestions for repair.
Thanks
Ben

the reservoir is attached to the pump , it's held on by the fitting adapters or nuts on the fitting nipples normally.

If you loosened your pressure fitting and it turned in the wrong place your reservoir could move a bit, see if you can tighten anything up there.

When I loosened the pressure fitting I had a wrench on the inner part of the fitting and it did not turn. Also I just broke loose enough to make sure I could get it off. I'm starting to suspect the reservoir is cracked.

If it's cracked it should be leaking pretty good.

The fluid would leak out, but not in a stream. The hoses were also dripping fluid, which led me to believe it was only the hoses. 40 years old it needs new hoses anyway. Apparently when I started to loosen the clap on the return line is when I found the loose reservoir.

1978/79 Passenger Cars (except with Hydro-Boost), F100/350 & Bronco use the Ford C-II P/S pump.

This pump has a plastic reservoir (3A697 in upper pic). The P/S pressure hose (3A719 in lower pic) has a straight tube with an O-Ring on it on the pump end.

This hose attaches to the pump with a qwik connect fitting.
