I know this always comes up! I have a 360 in a 72 f100. It sat in a barn for 18 years but I got it about 3 years ago and it does run. Blows oil out the exhaust big time along with I think very hot passenger side exhaust manifold. Fuel pump or vapor lock or? kept me from driving much last year. Something has to be done! I have a 390 long block that according to what I can find is from a 1967 Mustang with I think 320 HP. The guy is a friend and big Ford guy that said he tore it down and went through it (forgot what that all was) then decided not to use in a 70 truck and instead a 302. The other options are rebuilding the 360 and probably making it a 390? I am considering the EFI also. I also could get a crate engine?
FE crate engines are extremely expensive and I believe only survival motorsports sells them as a FE is a boutique engine compared to other more common types. I would go for the 390 out of the mustang as a platform for a rebuild. Not worth rebuilding a 360 when you have a 390 available.
I should also add that the 390 I don't think will need rebuild and is 600.00. My brother has a 94 351 that would need rebuild also but for some reason it doesn't seem like that would be the best choice even if free or cheap? Thanks

360/390 use the same engine block, the bore is the same (4.05"), the stroke is different.
So, the only difference is the crank, rods and pistons. EVERYTHING else is the same.
Measure the stroke to verify, because on sale day, 352/360's magically become 390's!
Sorry but I couldn't figure out how to add my comments with pictures. So, I think this is a 67 or 68 Mustang 390 with oem heads? If this seems right the story from my friend is gonna be 70 Ford F100. He put new bearings, rod and crank, rings, timing gear and honed and ground valves. He measured everything as tight and good to go. The girlfriend then said she wanted better mpg so he used a 302 instead, 3 years ago. I am pretty sure I will get this but still would like to confirm what it is if different than I think? Thanks
Sorry gashog I didn't see your response until I was done with my reply. I am still gonna open it up at my brothers and check tings but this guy has a lifetime of Fords and a garage full of them also. Sells at swap meets and knows his stuff on Fords. I will still check it but probably worth 600 even if by some remote chance it was a 360?
Might diagnose your current engine. Look down the carb and see if you have oil pooling in the intake. 18 years of sitting may have allowed a gasket to leak. These FE intakes will suck oil if not sealed properly. If you pull the intake, check angles from head to China wall and angles on the corresponding intake surface for proper fit.
Hot exhaust manifold could be air fuel mix. Tear down and clean the carb...takes a very little spec of dirt to mess up the air to fuel ratio.
65Ford...……...I really don't know if it's worth trying anything with this motor The carb was rebuilt, not recently. If you read my last comments about the 390? that I am considering buying you will see I am getting more unsure about what's next ? For some reason I was thinking the 390 was the 320 hp and now I am thinking 255? I don't have a 4barrel intake for either so that will be an issue also.
7M28: Well that head was cast December (M) 28th 1967 (7). Still need to verify the stroke.
A = January, M = December, the letter I is skipped. A cylinder head cast December 1967 would be installed on a 1968.
Notice the head casting number prefix of C8AE - This is: C8AZ-6049-M = 1968/71 Ford passenger car 390 2V/4V & 1968/71 F100/350 360/390 2V Cylinder Head.
So what would you make of this block? Be 360 or 390 and not a 330 mid size truck engine? Is there any idea then as to hp and torgue numbers? Assuming stock? I don't think that if it was the 330 I would want it because I read it's not really very good for what I have! Sorry if I am not that understanding of this.
