I want to put an automatic trans in my 49 F1. I would love to get some advise from those that have traveled that road. Been trying to do the research but can't seem to find the information needed to make a decision on which trans, and installation hang ups. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Realized I left some important info out. Sticking with my flathead V8 and will be swapping rear end for 8.8 out of '01 Explorer. Truck did not come with a radiator.
Hmmm what else?
Flat-o Products should have the parts you need to adapt an automatic to your flattie. I got his y block kit to adapt a ford c4 to my56 ,got the trans built and ready but have yet to install it ,does seem to be a well built kit.
I have used a flat-o-matic kit behind a flathead before .
One was in my 47 coupe and one was in a 33 ford pickup with an 8ba .
The c4 works well behind a flathead and is an easy swap .
I think they have a bellhousing to suit the trucks available now .
Thanks rancher and seaves. I know there are a lot of adaptors out there. What I'm trying to decide on is what trans I want to shoot for. C4, AOD, AODE ? Is it worth the hassle to go with an overdrive trans? Since the AODE is electric, how does it get info from the engine?
Consider the ratio of the rear end and tire size you choose when you consider an OD transmission. Will you have enough torque to turn a low ratio. If I remember right the UP of MI is mostly flat so you might be ok even with OD.

The AODE uses the ECU for it's control. The aftermarket controllers use a VSS and a TPS for shifting. IF you are going to adapt to an auto might as well go to one with an OD.

That depends. A C4 will fit without serious mods to the trans crossmember. No OD trans will. Easier and cheaper to go C4 and change the rear axle, if desired. With the stock 3.73 not sure that's really needed (if it has a 4.27, then it is).

There is only a 2 3/16" difference in mounting distance on the rear mount between the AOD and a case fill C4 The mods that are needed to the stock cross member to mount the C4 are extensive and will work for the AOD. Really the best solution is to remove it install an aftermarket one and after market master cylinder mount or fab your own. I'm not fan a cutting up factory bits as it negates the possibility of ever going to back to stock. Having the OD is a benefit no matter the final drive ratio and if you opt to use a 4R70W gear set you get a lower first and second. The AOD HP loss is on par with the C4.
Thanks everyone for the advise. Leaning toward the AOD. I've got a parts truck so i'll be sure to keep replacement parts for anything I modify. Can you really ever come back from the darker side?
