here is the link to the owner's manual

http://www.fordservicecontent.com/Fo.../01f23og4e.pdf

See page 176 and 177. It mentions the fuel pump and relay. The relay might be in the PCM?

On the '01, isn't it inside the passenger front kick panel? Behind the small plastic trim cover, underneath the glovebox, but it's on the sidewall, not the firewall.

The location of the fuel pump relay is not listed in the owner's manual nor is it in the PCM nor behind the kick panel nor underneath the glovebox nor on the sidewall or the firewall under the hood.

On an 01 Super Duty, the fuel pump relay is located in the "instrument panel relay block" which is located behind the dash, roughly above and slightly inboard of the gas pedal. . Remove the radio to access it. Turn the flashers on and follow the clicking sound, the FP relay is alongside the flasher relay.

Other than the flasher, one is the FP relay, the other is for the trailer tow running lamps. You'll need to sort it out, I don't recall which is which off the top of my head. Switch the parking lights on and identify which relay "clicks". The other one is the FP relay.

Okay, I think l I finally found the diagram in the EVTM.

So if it’s not the relay what’s the next step?

What exactly is the problem?
Is the engine turning, but not firing?
Do you have fuel pressure at the fuel rail test port?
Are you getting 12v at the fuel pump connector?
Is the Inertia Switch tripped or failed and not letting 12v thru it to the fuel pump?

Cranks but no start, once in a while it will start and then I’ll drive it around, but when you shut it off it won’t start just cranks, it’ll start if you crank it and hit the gas tank with a mallet.

That's almost always a sign the pump is worn out.

If you'd started with that instead of getting out in the weeds about the relay location, your question would have been answered right off the bat with the answer that would lead to the actual likely fix.

Does sound like your pump. But just to give you another thing to worry about in the future, your fuel pump relay is probably integral to the CJB like my 2003, and is not an individually serviceable component. There are a lot of articles here about soldering in a new relay or bypassing it all together. You might want to avoid the next round of "no start" by working on this after you replace your pump.
Good luck !

Fuel pump relay installed above the passenger side foot well and wired in after the inertia switch.

The externally wired relay, as done on your Excursion, is not needed on 2001 and older SD pickups and Excursions. That modification only became necessary starting on the '02 models.
