Gas gauge problems

My '89 F250hd, 7.5L with dual gas tanks has developed a problem with the rear tank. The front one shows the gauge correctly, but the rear one shows empty even when full. Although it can sometimes show a bit more, but still incorrectly.

When switched to the front tank, the gas gauge apparently works correctly.

Probably the sending unit is bad. Switch to the rear tank, and take the sending unit wire off the tank and ground it. The guage should swing one direction. Then take the wire off ground and let it hang in the air, and the guage should swing the other way. If this test works, then your wiring and guage are ok.

You can do it one of two ways. You can either run the rear tank empty and drop the tank. Or you can get some friends over and have them help you remover the bed. Method #1 you will have to disconnect the tank filler pipe, pump wiring, and the tank straps. Method #2 you will have to disconnect the tank filler pipe, and disconnect the brake light harness. This is how you get to the top of the tank. I believe you have to pull the pumps out to get to the sending unit.

It worked for a while, and today decided to go out again. It needs replacement.

Do I have to use OEM sending unit or will an aftermarket unit work? I have about 10 gallons in the tank at this point.

Also, based on FSM, it looks like the fuel pump is integrated with the sending unit. Is that one or two different parts?

Looks like it comes all together as an assembly when you buy the pump. On this site it was $89.00

That clarifies it. My pump still works but looks like I will have to replace the whole thing.

Keep the pump, for in the future, just incase it goes out.

It's just advance auto. It may be called something different in your area. The site is www.partsamerica.com. When you get there. go to the top of the screen and hit the add a vehicle or change a vehicle button. Plug in your truck, and then hit shopping to get to the parts section. You can also try www.autozone.com, www.napaonline.com, or many others.

I was hoping to find an OEM part, because I hear that aftermarket stuff will not last as long. Advanced Auto parts is notorious for selling junk, I once wasted a lot of time because their sensor wasn't working in the range of OEM sensor (knock).

What about this item on ebay, it claims to be a fuel pump but doesn't look anything like the picture above.

I would go to advance before I would fool with anybody on ebay. I am sure the Ford dealer will sell you one.
