I have no idea on the odometer thing, but must commend you.
73 years old with a 19 year old daughter! My oldest is 16, and I can hardly handle the estrogen at the age of 47.
I thought I had my third daughter late in life. She's 6 now. So she'll be 32 if I make it to 73.
I also have a 13 year old daughter...
I spend a lot of time in the garage... LOL
I'm curious about this quirky problem so I poked around a bit. The first photo above is from a speedometer labeled 1976 (100 MPH), the second from one labeled 1978 (80MPH). The odometers have pretty different setups.
It does not matter if the speedo is 100 mph or 85 mph, the drive spins counterclockwise, with the back of the speedo facing you, to make the speedo & odometer work. So, don't buy that new $120 speedo, thinking it reads differently, it doesn't.
"the odometer runs backwards, continually from 9 around to 0" Hard to understand what your problem is with your description. Are you saying you started out with the odo reading, let's say, 70020.9, and you drove 20 miles & the odo now reads 70000.9? Or, what place on the odo goes from 9 to around 0??
Agree. Seems like the only way the only way the odo can spin backwards is if the cable is turning the wrong direction. And if that were the case I don't see how the speedo would work properly. By posting the photos I'm not necessarily agreeing with the OP's view that his problem arises from the "wrong" speedometer unit.
Even if you spin the speedo input the wrong direction, clockwise, it will not spin the odometer backwards. I suspect there is some sort of one way clutch built in to the odo drive. I have a couple of bad speedos in the garage, I'll have to cut one up & see what is inside the odo drive.
Maybe OP can provide a video while driving (to stay lawful have a passenger record or stay on private property* legal disclaimer lol) and we can watch the speedo and odo
