Help with Id a 429

Hello everyone. I have a 429 that I'm putting into my project truck. I already know that it is a 71 429 by the casting #'s. My question is the VIN that is stamped on the back of the engine. I did find that the 1st # is the year and the letter is the production plant and the rest is from the original VIN. My question is were was production plant "Z"? It clearly shows that and can not find anything. Please help.

Z assembly plant code was St. Louis. VIN consecutive unit number beginning with 5 would indicate a Mercury product. They built full size cars there. Chances are it came out of your grandpa's big sled Marquis. Certainly nothing high performance.

Should have the high compression heads, if you are sticking with the cast iron heads

What led you to believe that?

I was just going give a freshen up. New rings, seals, and bearings. Nothing fancy.

Really not many options for 429s, especially if you are planning to keep the press fit wrist pins. I think you can really only find stock style cast pistons with the press fit pins. If you are not doing a high power build and it doesn't have much wear, I would just home the cylinders, throw new bearings in, put an aluminum intake and cam in it and call it good.

There is no way, N-O-N-E that you can identify a 429 engine from the block casting number, for the simple reason that the 429 and 460 use the same block, so the casting number will be the same.

For example, block casting number: D1VE-6015-AB or A1B or A2B = Internal balance = 1971/73 429, 1971/78 460 and some 1979 460.

Mid-year 1979, FoMoCo changed the 460 to external balance, has a weighted crank spacer.

There are no before/from serial numbers or production dates, the block casting number must be known to get the correct harmonic balancer and flexplate.

D9TE-6015-AB = Some 1979 460, 1980/97 460. This only affected 1979 F150/350 & E250/350. 460 no longer available in cars after 1978.

I'm in central PA near Hershey Park. I do know it is a 429 by the casting in the crank. I was wondering if any further imfo could be had from theses #'s.
Thanks everyone .

Crankshafts have ID codes stamped on them, these are not casting numbers.

The numbers on the crank ID it to be a 429. All I asked was of these numbers on the back of the block
that are stamped in could ID it a little closer.
