My Clockspring died which has disabled the airbag and horn. I wired in a doorbell button on the dash for the horn, which is very inconvenient, but I hate driving without the airbag protection. The dealers all tell me I need an F5UZ-14A664-A Clockspring. I have looked everywhere and can't find one. My wheel is horn and airbag only so I figured that I might be able to use one that does cruise control too and just modify the wiring harness so I would be using the horn and airbag only. I even contacted DORMAN and they tell me they have nothing to help me out. Is there anyone out there who has worked on these things enough to know a work around substitution or repair?
You'd need a wiring diagram to be sure if the other clockspring would work. OR find a dealer with an old-timer who knows his parts well.
I have the wiring diagram book for the 96. I'll see if I can find the correct pages. I can post them here, or maybe PM them to you. I'll take a look tomorrow. Hitting the sack now.
We have a retired parts counterman expert here named "Number Dummy" (I think that's right) he has the ability to scan dealer's onhand stock and might be able to find what you need. He'll likely check in within a few days. Hang loose.

He'll likely check in within a few days. How about a few minutes?
F5UZ-14A664-A .. Clockspring aka Cover & Contact Assy - Use without Speed Control / Obsolete
FORD PARTS ONLY in Bayamon Puerto Rico has 1 = 787-786-9180.
Assuming this is the correct part number, this is the only one I could find. Suggest calling Green Sales in Cincinnati OH (800-543-4959) to see if they can find any.
If you can obtain the schematics for both clocksprings used with and without VSC you could compare how they interfaced with the chassis wiring, possibly reconfigure the connectors to allow the available versions with VSC to work with the non-VSC vehicle.
I would advise or warn you to be VERY CAREFUL doing this sort of wiring modification. If you do go that route make sure to disconnect the battery terminals at least 15 minutes before beginning--this gives any stored voltage in the air bag module time to bleed off and prevent triggering an air bag deployment.
This should be fairly easy but it does demand careful attention to detail.

I actually have the full set of shop manuals for the 96 vans. I am going to attempt to use a DORMAN 525-205 which is the F5UZ-14A664-NB model. I found a distributor who told me this model is supposedly compatible with my van even though I do not have speed control in the steering. I guess we'll see.
Sounds good. Sometimes things like that can simply ignore unused features, like cruise control. Sometimes not. It's worth a gamble. Please post back with your results, so others can find the info.

Finally finished it today. I used a DORMAN 525-205 Clockspring. DORMAN said it would not work, but the distributor said it could. The connector on the clockspring is about a 32nd of an inch off so I had to use a Dremel tool to shave a small 1/16" grove the aluminum steering wheel frame to be able to slide the steering wheel on the shaft easily. Then after tracing out the wiring I determined that to get the horn working all you have to do is cut off the thinner black wire (there are two black wires one thick and one thin) from the new clockspring connector under the dash and splice a short wire to it and attach it to a ground. I just used a self tapping hex screw and wash, and screwed it right to the frame. Horn and air bag are back online and I am happy as a clam at high tide.

Yeah, I just had to get it done, I finally got tired of the embarrassment of having a doorbell button screwed to my dashboard for my "Green Acres" horn.
