My son has replaced the alternator because it was overcharging at 16.5V. When he installed the new one it tested at 14.5V at an idle. When he drove it around the block it had changed the voltage to 16.5V and stays there. When he accelerates the gauges on the dash go crazy, but if he disconnects the alternator the gauges do nothing. Anyone know what this is caused by??

If you in the 6.0L forum because it's a 6.0L, then it's not PCM controlled. You're just getting bad advice.
If he's disconnecting the alternator while it's running, he shouldn't do that. It could be the sense wire connection is broken or has a blown fusible link. The sense wire is the voltage feedback that tells the alternator how much current output there should be which will also control the voltage.
Thank you too all who helped with this. Sparky83, you were dead on the problem, The truck is back in service with the alternator working properly. My son had replaced the small red wire with a heavier gauge, when he replaced that with the correct gauge it was back to working properly.
Thanks Again
